Z axis won't move to the top during XYZ calibration

Hope someone can help.

During calibration of XYZ calibration it homes the X- and Y- axis as it should, then the Z axis should rise to the top. But for me it won't. The motor of the Z axis makes noice like it is going up and down, but it stays at the same place the entire time. Then the nozzle starts moving, way above the bed for a short while and then LCD screen shows the message "XYZ calibration failed. Bed calibration point was not found."

My guess is that since the Z axis wont move it has no idea where the bed is.

I can enter the LCD menu and manually make the Z axis go up and down without any problem. I can't make any sense why it won't rise during calibration.

RE: Z axis won't move to the top during XYZ calibration

You might need to get onto Support's online chat for this one, but off the top of my head I've found turning the printer off, waiting a few seconds, then turning it back on can clear a number of temporary glitches (resets cpu registers, clears r/w memory, etc.).  Since you're able to manually move the Z axis, it sounds like the firmware might have a bit of a memory loss, so to speak.  What version of firmware are you running, 3.7.1 or 3.7.0?  Is this a MK3S, MK3 or MK2.5?  Reflashing the firmware might be a last resort if nothing else seems to help.

Can you move the z axis by hand , left and wright to check if it is stuck/to heavy, with your physical hands not with buttons.

Di you do maintenance, clean rods and oil rods, this needed every few weeks. After long time not using the printer, it can get stuck also.

Check the whole printer for lose bolts , screws, thy will come loose, this is also maintenance, to check

You could also try to move the z axis to the top and then start calibration, it needs to reset at the top.

Check if your pinda sensor works, cable broken?

Try doing a full factory reset with clear ... then restart the wizard to run all the calibrations.

Thank you for the replies. I forgot to mention that this is a MK3S printer.

I have moved the Z to top (middle, lowest) serveral times without success. All it does is take that height as 0 after calibrating.

I have made numerous resets and tried different firmwares.

I have loosened the triangular pieces the cover the two Z-motors. Acctually I have reassembled the entire Z-axis and Einsy-case with all its cables.

After contacting support three times they think there is nothing more to do than to send me a new mother board. They were very patient and accomodating! Will mention here if this solves thee issue. I also thought one of the trapezoid nuts were very tight when I biult the machine and when checking it again so they will send one of these aswell. But its strange since it moves without problem in Settings-Move.

By the way this topic became a double post so if admin would be so kind to remove one of the entries.

Hey,

I have the exact same problem with my printer ! The nuts where also very tightly. Would you be so kind and and send me a notification or post here if you solved the problem ? I will do it too if I'm faster 🙂

Andre - have you performed a FACTORY RESET with DATA CLEAR?  The data clear part is important.  A reset is NOT enough.

https://help.prusa3d.com/article/SYvbQ66IXF-factory-reset

And use the option:

All data - resets everything including all calibration data, meaning the whole EEPROM is erased. After this reset, the user is expected to go through the calibration flow again, with the exception of the probe height setting.

It's interesting, I have the same issue with the mk3. After some first uses of xyz calibration without this problem, I have actually the same problem. if I help a little bit the z motors, it will eventually raise for some centimeters, but will anyway block like you, saying xyz calibration failed. And it happens wether I changed the firmware (3.7.1, 3.7.0, 3.5.1, etc...) or factory reset the prusa. So I am interested to see if the change of your motherboard will change anything.

FACTORY RESET with DATA CLEAR

is vital when the machine gets confused.

Swapping motherboards will have a similar effect, but make it look like there was a hardware issue when there really was not.

My problem is solved, the trapezoid nuts were the problem! The support sent me 4! instead of the 2 needed nuts (great support)and now it's printing extreme precise.

Hope your problem will be fixed so easy like mine.

That is good news.

Cross thread damaging the trapezoidal nuts is probably more frequent a problem than it need be.

Prusa has one attach the trapezoidals to the x-axis and then thread them by turning the z-screws. That gives zero feedback against cross threading. It is safer to place the x-axis on the machine WITHOUT the trapezoids. Support the x-axis with a pair of filament boxes. Thread unattached trapezoids onto the Z-screws. Spin trapezoids down to the x-ends.  Finally bolt down trapezoids.

I have this same problem.  Firmware 3.7.1.  I did a factory reset all data.  I loosened the trapezoidal screws.  No luck.  After assembly, it would only go up about 3 inches and stop.  After the first factory reset it went up about 4 inches from the top and stopped.

RE: Z axis won't move to the top during XYZ calibration

I am also facing this issue.  during xyz calibration, after the wizard asks if the steel plate is on, the carriage is supposed to rise to the top.  what happens instead, is the motors grind for several seconds, the carriage does not move at all, the motors activate again, and the carriage raises 20-30 mm and stops.  it then prompts me to do the paper thing, lowers to the bed and gives "Calibration failed! Check the axes and run again." Logic suggests that this step fails due to the printer not being able to accurately calibrate z.  I am able to manually move the rods with little effort when the motor steps are disabled.  I am able to move the z axis using the software as well.  The z axis only freezes during z axis calibration.

Somewhere else people have tried doing an auto-home, then the cal worked.  Can't recall the specifics, but think it was one of the Z or XYZ cals.

I had the same issue after assembly. I had to lower PINDA probe a bit, using tip of the zip tie instead of the strip, contrary to what manual suggested. After that, it found first point and began calibration process.
