Y-Axis Motor Soft Clicking

I've just assembled the MKS+ kit and done a few prints which seem to be of good quality. I'm a little concerned about soft clicking which is coming from the Y-Axis motor and want to be sure that it's nothing to worry about.

I've attached a video where it's hopefully audible:

It seems to occur only during specific motions, usually when doing diagonal infill. When moving only in the Y-Axis it seems fine. The clicking seems to happen at regular intervals in proportion to the motor speed while moving at a single speed and this isn't caused by changes in direction. I suspect it's the motor as the vibration from the clicking seems strongest when I've checked with my finger.

What is causing this? Is it anything to worry about?

I don't hear any clicking in the video.

But it is normal that the printer makes more noise on diagonal movements and on circles. Atleast mine does. But I wouldn't call that clicking.

Maybe other can hear something in your video.

I post the link here again as it doesn't show oke in your post.

I do have exactly the same clicking noise from the Y-Axis stepper motor while printing diagonal from top right to bottom left. I guess that seems normal especially in lower print speeds.

Do you get also Y-Axis crashes during your print even though the Y-Axis moves freely without any resistance?

RE: Y-Axis Motor Soft Clicking

I hear the clicking you are concerned with and have the exact same problem with my new printer (factory assembled).   Only happens when both x and y axis are running.   If you run the printer without filament it still makes that sound, so that eliminates the extruder.  I have been on the help line for hours and they have no idea.  I use 2 of these printers at work and neither of them make this clicking sound from the y-axis motor.  I have even taken the g-code from models at work and tried them still a problem.

Have you got any resolution on this?

Any problems with printing?  Print quality?  Usually problems show up as features in print qualitly.

If this is new to you - the best thing you can do is eliminate resonance - put on some squash ball feet - and things will get quieter for sure.

@dan-rogers

So I ordered some squash balls from amazon.  Any recommendations on feet?  I see there are lots of versions to print out.  What have you tried  that work the best, prefer lower profile if possible.

I printed the ones that reuse the frame front and rear cross-member screws.  It is a little tight on the SD card but just takes some care inserting cards.

Hi,

the squash ball solution will probably not eliminate the weird soft clicking of your y axis motor. My printer currently runs on a concrete slab with foam, similiar to the setup in this video: Most of the printer noises are gone, but not that soft clicking.

I've stopped looking for a solution as my prints come out just fine. Not sure if this is going to be a problem long term.

RE: Y-Axis Motor Soft Clicking

I have a similar issue.

I'm printing a rectangular base.

I can hear the clicking and can see the vibration on the Y-Axis belt. I originally thought something was interfering with the belt or pulley since it *seemed* to be occurring at the same point in the Y-axis movement. I could see it as a parasitic line in the X direction on the print as the diagonals progressed.

Then an odd thing happened. The position of the clicking began to traverse in the Y-direction. Now I was looking at it imposing a rectangular-shaped parasitic on the surface with its origin on the rear left. It led me to conclude that the problem wasn't mechanical. The Y-axis movement is decoupled from the X-Axis. There's no reason I can think of for the parasitic to do a right-angle turn.

Another odd thing then happened. As it finished that layer and began on the next, the rectangle origin switched to the front right!

The two parasitic rectangles began to overlap, creating a smaller rectangle in the centre. A picture follows. (I have also taken a video that has the clicking)

My belief is that there is something in the Gcode that is doing this. For information, I am using Octopi to manage the printing.

RE: Y-Axis Motor Soft Clicking

I found my issue.

Several of the neodymium magnets under the heatbed had dropped off. They were moving with the heatbed, touching and occasionally moving in the undercarriage somewhere
