Why: PEI Sheet for MK3 (Ultem)

Hi guys

Total noob so excuse.

Why would I buy the PEI sheet, and is this a once off or you replace this at regular interval ?

See it comes with adhesive so the Glue for printbed is not required.

because for most situations its the best option. only need to replace it if its damaged, and its pretty hard to do compared to the alternatives.

I found it easy to remove with Youtubes help and some IPA and a razor knife.

I think you're talking about the replacement PEI sheet. It's for replacing the PEI on the bed if it becomes damaged. The adhesive is to stick it to the printer bed, not for making prints stick. You don't need glue to make prints stick with PEI.

The old one is a pain to remove from the bed. It might be easier just to purchase an extra steel sheet if you have an MK3 or MK2.5.

Planning on Mk3, as I see it comes with a new special all awesome bed sheet... I then saw in the shop that PEI sheet, and wondered if I need one, considering the new sheet of the MK3.

I would order an extra steel sheet instead as they come with two PEI surfaces (double sided). It's much easier to swap out if the surface becomes damaged rather than trying to replace just the PEI sheet. Those spare PEI sheets are more for the old MK2.

hadn't really thought of that, would be almost 20$ for two sheets plus the labor and cost of limonene, vs just 30 for a new plate.

i still have my original and after a year i'm only just now *thinking* about replacing the 1st side, as it has a couple of cracks from printing PC, but nothing that impacts prints too much.

A new steel sheet is definitely worth the extra money to save the hassle of trying to remove a PEI sheet.

Re: Why: PEI Sheet for MK3 (Ultem)

How can I order a new steel sheet please?

I have a mk3 since last June 2018. Printed fine except for some adhesion problems. In spite of washing the sheet in soapy water, rubbing with alcohol, I still had to use acetone regularly. I was aware of potential problems but couldn't get consistent adhesion any other way. Around November I found even that doesn't work. None of my attempted prints will stick. Tried both sides of the sheet.

I've bought two replacement PEI sheets (the sticky back plastic ones like a screen protector). I've also acquired the needed materials and read the instructions. I'm rather daunted by the process, and would rather buy a replacement steel sheet, either plain or coated. I can't see such a part in the shop.

Any help much appreciated including videos of the replacement process.

I don't know if it's related, but the problem started when I had a clogged extruder, and had to disassemble the extruder bits to replace the ptfe tube. When I got everything back together, I recalibrated the xyz axes and then the first level. I can't get a satisfactory first level, even down to over -1000. I've also reset the pinda probe without success.

The PEI sheet is easy to remove. The adhesive is not. Some sheets are easier to remove if you freeze them before removal.

If this helps:

After a few months of printing I started to get some adhesion issues - like some others.

I went Medieval: 1500 grade paper (very light rub) then acetone and Isopropyl alcohol (IPA) - the PEI is not as shiny but everything sticks again. I have consistent results with PLA and PETG since the rub. IPA before PLA and Windolene before PETG.

I had already bought a spare smooth PEI steel sheet but I'm not expecting to need it anytime soon.

yeah people are afraid of acetone, but it 100% works. also works 10x better than the orange stuff for removing the adhesive.

I use orange oil to remove the adhesive.

I generally use washing up liquid and water, applied with a clean kitchen sponge to prepare my buildplate for printing PLA, if this does not restore adhesion, I turn the sponge over and use the 'Scotchbright' surface to lightly scuff the buildplate surface, and I always dry with a clean, dry paper towel

Re: Why: PEI Sheet for MK3 (Ultem)

How can I order a new steel sheet for my mk3? I've searched all over the forum and the prusa shop sites, but can't find a link.

My prints just will not adhere now, after six months of great printing. The pei seems to be damaged, but I am terrified of fittedng the replacement pei. The instructions are quite daunting and my dexterity skill are sorely lacking. Thanks.
