Which head do I have? Upgrading to MK3s
Hi all,
I am upgrading to a MK3S+ using this kit:
Original Prusa i3 MK3/S to MK3S+ upgrade kit
But I am confused about which head I have, I think the last upgrade was the MMU2S but forget! The instructions document the disassembly for a MK3 and MK3S but mine looks different to these.
Any pointers would be appreciated.
Thanks
Ben
RE: Which head do I have? Upgrading to MK3s
that is the MMU2Filament sensor tower.
You may need to source the two magnets and ball bearing for a normal extruder rebuild.
you can get replacements from Prusa, but it may be quicker and cheaper to get replacements off ebay or Amazon
the Mk3S+ normally ships with a red filament sensor and a Supa Pinda, I have never tried using a black filament sensor and Mk2s pinda.
There is a reference to Mk3S with Supa Pinda
https://help.prusa3d.com/article/firmware-updating-mk3s-mk3s-mk3_2227
firmware has now moved on,
the Prusa Firmware page has seperate sections for Mk3S+ and Mk3S
Both show the latest firmware to be 3.12, but the fact that ther are two sections, may mean that there are differences in the firmware builds.
After the upgrade to Mk3S+ Extruder assembly, try loading the Mk3S+ firmware, if that complains about the Pinda & / or the Filament sensor, then try loading the Mk3S version of the firmware, to the best of my knowledge everything about the Mk3S+ extruder except Supa Pinda, and black filament sensor will fork with the Mk3S firmware.
Note! I have not changed either of my mk3's or Franken Prusa (which is a Mk3 in a Mk2 Frame) to Mk3S+ Extruder.
Prusa stated if your Mk3S was working well, there was no real benefit from upgrading to the Mk3S+ extruder, because the changes (excluding filament sensor and Supa pinda,) were largely to make assembly easier and a working Mk3s, is already assembled...
and I don't like fixing something that's not broken... (Most of the time) 🙂 Says she, with a dragon hot end on one printer, and a Zorbiter extruder motor & gearbox, on another printer... (Oh, and a mk42 12 volt heatbed on a mk2) erm,,, and the complete Frankenprusa... Lol... My other Mk3S actually should have a Mk3S+ extruder, to make the MMU filament sensor adjustment easier... but I soldiered on with the Mk3S Filament sensor tower.... (at this point I realise that even that printer has a modification... I have added an LED to the filament sensor, to see immediately what the sensor status was... ) hmmm. these things can creep up on you!
best wishes, Joan

RE: Which head do I have? Upgrading to MK3s
Thank you, this is really helpful! I agree with not fixing something that works but mine is in a sorry state and my new MK3s+ works beautifully, so I just want them to be the same.
I think I have sourced all the parts already (inc. the ones you mentioned) and printed the appropriate pieces.
So which upgrade guide should I follow?
Original Prusa i3 MK3/S to MK3S+ upgrade kit
I think I stripped everything down already but want to check before I get going.
RE: Which head do I have? Upgrading to MK3s
if you ignore the tower, which is already off, the mk3S to mk3S+ guide should be fine!
