Whenever I run out of filament - I have to disassemble the entire extruder
Every time the filament runs out, the extraction fails and the filament gets stuck inside the extruder. The only way I've found to dislodge it is to disassemble the extruder (which takes a VERY long time). Is this to be expected? The run-out sensor doesn't do be doing anything.
Oh, and it's totally impossible to continue the print after the extruder has been moved around, so the print fails.
Do you all throw away spools as they start running out, or am I doing something wrong?

Is the filament sensor active?
Look in the "Settings / Filament sensor On" menu.

Try extruding a bit of filament before ejecting if you can. That will soften the tip and reduce the possibility of a blob getting stuck higher up during removal.

You have to trim off the bent piece of filament for the end before it goes into the extruder. Otherwise it’ll get stuck.

It happened to me once because of the bend filament end. I was able to open the door, remove the filament and assemble everything back without moving the head. It continued to print like usual. No failed print.

Yep - it did notice that it had run out - but it fed it far enough that it couldn't be caught!

Thanks to all who replied, it sounds like it should be possible to save the situation without resorting to disassembling the extruder. I'll try harder next time - but I would prefer if the prusa stopped extruding waaaay earlier than it seems to have done so far.

If I had your problem often - I would look at one of the extruder variants that make this easier.
Bear BNBSX or Skelly. I have the parts for the BNBSX - still on my to-do list.

I would prefer with as-well but it's physically not possible. The filament end need to pass the sensor before it triggers. And if the filament end is angled badly because this is how it gets on the roll then there is not much you can do at the sensor.

I am having this exact same issue with my Prusa MK4S, current firmware 6.2.0. I just spent a few hours on chat with Prusa support, and they were unable to resolve the issue.

The issue mentioned in this github thread seems like a similar, but different, issue.
We did some tests on the chat, and the filament sensor seems to be working fine. In the Info > Filament Sensor section of the Prusa LCD menu, the sensor numbers respond correctly when you manually insert and remove filament fromt he top of the extruder. It also correctly detects when I'm about to run out of filament. It also correctly detects if the filament has been inserted and/or removed during the different steps of the 'Change Filament', 'Unload Filament', or 'Load Filament' menu options. They work fine as long as the filament doesn't run out int he middle of a print. We even tried cutting the power and tried to see if we could replace the filament after the MK4S recovered and restarted printing from a power outage. Nope, didn't work.
If it does run out mid-print, I am forever stuck on the "Please remove filament from sensor" screen (EVEN THOUGH THERE'S NOTHING IN THERE). The only thing I can do from there is reset the printer, and throw out the in-progress print. After restarting, I can load the new filament in no problem.
This seems to be a software issue - not a hardware issue - the switching-filament-mid-print for some reason always things there is filament in the sensor, even when it's empty, even after restarting... would be awesome to get a firmware update that fixes this. I'd be happy to record a video of this whole process if it would help. It's happened to me about 5 times so far, with the same result each time no matter what I've tried....
