Underextrusion after nozzle change

I have MK3S+. It was working fine printing for a month or so and then I decided to put in a .6 nozzle.

I suspect that I didn't put the nozzle all the way in and had a gap between the nozzle and the heat break because filament started going up and gobbling on top of the heat block. I have since disassembled the hotend and put a new heat block in (heat sink and heat break are the same) and put back the .4 nozzle. However, something is still wrong.

I get the sort of underextrusion like in the picture, just some pieces missing. I can also hear a sound as if something pops in the nozzle every once in a while. I tried searching online but didn't find this pattern. Could anyone please point me to what I need to adjust?

So, it was a wet PLA. I think that a larger nozzle is more sensitive to moist because it pushes more filament per time unit. I attributed it to a nozzle change because I couldn't buy into two unrelated issues at the same time.

Well, at least I am super familiar with an extruder after having it disassembled like four times.
