Thermal Runaway

 I'm hitting the dreaded thermal runaway on my MK3S during a print. Did the normal troubleshooting (checked wires/board), replaced the thermistor and heater block, and tried a new Noctua extruder fan. What is happening is that it heat creeps past its set temperature. I'll watch during the print and it will go from 215c for PLA to 222c and keep creeping up. I've Tried a PID calibration both before and after replacing the thermistor and heater block but no dice as this too causes it to hit thermal runaway. I'm down to something wrong with the E3D block itself, or, the Prusa einsy board. Thoughts?

Having the same issue. Received my MK3S+ two days ago. First couple of prints went well. Now I get a thermal runaway each time I print. I have tried the same steps as you have listed, and even added a silicon sock and recalibrated. I am printing in an enclosure. I'm at a lose. Would it be wise to downgrade the firmware to 3.11.0 with the E3D V6 as listed on the E3D website?

"Prusa released a new firmware 10/01/23 that has the potential to cause temperature issues with the Revo Six, Please refrain from upgrading for the time being until we can verify stability.

For the time being, firmware 3.11.0 is the last known stable firmware for use with Revo HotEnds."

Hey, you both seem to confuse several different issues. Before you can get help, you need to get straight what happens with your printer.

@edg: "Thermal runaway"  is a condition that is sensed by the firmware and displayed on the LCD. Here is how it works: https://help.prusa3d.com/article/thermal-runaway-i3-series_2131
Is that what you have?

@robert-22 The known problem you are referring to is an issue of the newly introduced "thermal model" firmware 3.12.0, the corresponding warning is "THERMAL ANOMALY" on the LCD (see https://help.prusa3d.com/article/thermal-model-calibration_382488  ) - this is not a "thermal runaway" and the known problem is only applicable if you have a Revo Six hot end - which is not to be confused with the original E3D V6 hot end the MK3S+ is shipped with. So if you did not modify your MK3S+ and installed a Revo 6 hot end, this does not apply to your printer.
Do you have a Revo 6 hot end installed?

I have the stock E3d V6 as was shipped with the unit. I misspoke about the runaway. I mentioned runaway due to the fact that yesterday, the hot end heated to the point the filament was bubbling a smoking coming out of the nozzle (Polylight Air 1.0 originally set at 215). The temp jumped up to 285 before I could power off the unit and let it cool. That has only happened once. The rest of the time I get the anomaly warning and a paused prints due to thermal errors. About every 5 to 10 minutes during a print, the temp will rapidly shoot up or down about 15 degrees before the print is paused.

If you have checked all components (thermistor internal resistance = approx. 100kohms at 25 degrees C. room temperature and heater cartridge internal resistance = approx. 14.4 ohms at room temperature) and everything is in order, I would contact the Prusachat.

Just log in with your Prusa account and select the eshop. After a few seconds the chat window should appear on the lower right corner. If the chat window does not open, disable a possibly activated adblocker or try another browser.

I contacted Prusachat today and it was determined I have a bad hotend thermsistor. Waiting for the replacement.

How am I confused as to what thermal runaway is? The hotend is shooting past its max set temp for PLA. Setting PID and replacing the thermistor / heater cartridge is pretty standard troubleshooting for this type of issue. Thanks for the condescension. 

I was able to fix my issue as it looked like a stuck PID value on the einsy board. I reflashed the firmware to 3.1.2, and ran a PID calibration successfully. Back up and printing without issue and the hotend is no longer shooting past the maximum temp value.
