Suddenly cannot calibrate no matter what I do

I have a Prusa MK3 (without the Multi Material Upgrade). I was just printing a normal print and everything was seemingly going fine. About halfway through, though, I discovered that the nozzle was all the way off to the side and it seemed like it lost its calibration. I then tried to recalibrate the printer but no matter what I did, but it always gave me an error that the bed calibration point was not found. I then tried to auto home the printer but it couldn’t find the appropriate spot for that either. When I try to calibrate it, either the nozzle bangs into a side of the printer, or presses so far down that it pushes into the build plate. It seems to have completely lost its understanding of the space around it despite it working just fine while it was in the middle of a print and in a matter of seconds became completely unusable for seemingly no reason. Now no matter what I do I cannot make the calibrate the printer and I’m not sure what I can do from here if it outright cannot find the calibration point.

I would say that somewhere during your last print the PINDA probe has been moved. Go through the assembly guide and make sure both the nozzle and the PINDA as adjusted fine and only then run the calibration again.

I have printed countless times before this print and there's never been an issue with the probe coming out of place which makes this situation odd.
I've tried adjusting the PINDA probe but it looks perfectly in place and yet it still does not work.

does the probe change its light?

I have a Prusa,therefore I research.

does the probe change its light?

No, it is red as it usually is.

does it change if you put metal up to it?

Yes, if I get too close with the metal the red light shuts off until I remove the metal

Re: Suddenly cannot calibrate no matter what I do

can you "calibrate Z" it should just bring the Zs up but maybe they got off

Yeah it seems to calibrate Z just fine. No problems there. It's just when it goes to search for the calibration point to begin the XY calibration that it has trouble.

so did it finish the 9 point calibration on the z calibrate?

Oh that. I thought you were talking about when it raises the extruder to its maximum height to calibrate the Z axis.
When it tries to do the 9 point thing it fails sometimes because the extruder crashes into the side or sometimes because the extruder goes so far down it begins to press down on the heat bed with it being unable to find the calibration point.

Re: Suddenly cannot calibrate no matter what I do

man, maybe your pinda wire is bad. the pinda should stop it from hitting the bed.

I just don't know how that can be the case if it still recognizes when metal comes close to it which I saw when the light shut off as I approached it with metal.
And I also just don't really get how it can go bad just like that when it worked fine one second and not the next.

RE: Suddenly cannot calibrate no matter what I do

When i bought my printer assembled it worked right out of the box. I made a change and wanted to make sure everything was calibrated and started having this exact issue. Hard reset your printer and skip the calibration wizard. Go into your Live-Z calibrate and put it to something really high like -2 then do the xyz calibrate (also move the z axis all the way to the top to make it skip steps so both sides are level). The first time this happened i reflashed the firmware and  and make sure your pina prob is essentially the same height as the nozzle. This has happened twice when i tried to redo the calibration after i changed a part on the printer and had to move the probe. Definitely a software error so keep this in mind youll have to redo it all if you need to change anything. Best of luck hope they fix this issue

RE: Suddenly cannot calibrate no matter what I do

I am having the same problem along with a bad filament sensor warning. I ordered 4 built MK3S for the classroom. 3 are doing great, but the 4th is a basket case. The machine will not XYZ calibrate. The filament sensor is bad. The Pinda probe prevents crashes only sporadically. The Z-calibrate does not seem to do anything when I change the values, but I will try again. What do you mean by "hard reset"? I will try reflashing the firmware and aligning the pinda probe as you describe. I expect this level of troubleshooting for DIY build, but it's frustrating on a brand new prebuilt printer.

Have you contacted support via chat in the Prusa e-store? They're very good and should be able to help you with any problems, including shipment of replacement parts. You paid the bucks for a Prusa, take advantage of the support included in that price!

Yea i saw a video yesterday and realized my filament sensor is also not working. If you hit the reset x button and then hold the selector button in until factory reset should come up

RE: Suddenly cannot calibrate no matter what I do

A full factory reset - but select DATA CLEAR or it won't be doing what you need to do.

When it boots after the DATA CLEAR reset, you'll be at day one settings and will be able to run the full power up wizard.

Banging the sides - as you describe it - implies the printer has lost the X or Y offsets.  This can happen if one of the two axes have "crashed" ... common if the bearings aren't properly lubricated, or something is hanging up as the extruder or bed moves.  Crashes also happen when a part has a geometry that promotes curling, and the nozzle passes over the curl and snags.  Just keep your eyes open for these sorts of things after you get back running.
