Rattling sound

Hi there!

I just finished assembling my mk3 and everything works fine, self test and cal went without any issues, parallelism is ok. Test prints look good.
The only issue I have is this annoying rattling sound which I believe is not normal.

(Most apparent around 0:25)

As far as I can tell it's coming from the extruder block but I'm not 100% sure. Also it seems to me it happens when there is X movement. Manually moving the axis from the menu (X,Y,Z,E) is silent as well as the calibration moves.
Any ideas?

Thank you.

Re: Rattling sound

Yours is actually quieter than mine except for that rattling noise. My motor noises are louder than the fan, although still very quiet. I don't have anything like that, and it doesn't sound like the "extruder clicks" problem. Do check to make sure there's nothing else rattling around on your print table. That sound reminds me of annoying rattles in my car when something rattles against plastic. You can try pressing a finger against different surfaces as it prints to see if anything stops or reduces it. Are your prints coming out OK?

Thanks, I tried dampening parts with my finger without success. Bart from customer service replied to my message and asked to move the axes manually to see which one makes the noise. It is definitely the X at a specific speed range.

I think I assembled the bearings correctly but I might have overlooked something.

Other than that works like a charm.

Re: Rattling sound

Mine has been doing something quite similar.

Started since I had to handle it around while re assembly the hot end to change the thermistor.

I'm planning on tightening all and rechecking it today. It doesn't affect printing, at least doesnt seem like it, but it gets quite annoying.

I'm wondering if I over tightened something there or for some other reason the bearings don't sit flat.

My MK3 makes the same noise, and it has been driving me crazy trying to locate it. I am starting to think it may be the heatshield at the back of the PSU, but it is hard to pinpoint.

I had a very similar noise. For me, I finally narrowed it down to the LCD screen rattling in the housing during Y axis movements. Tightening the screws holding down the LCD panel in the housing helped for me. You can test this by reaching behind the LCD console and pinching the LCD screen against the housing to see if the noise goings away while printing.

Re: Rattling sound

assembled mine 4 days ago...i have exactly the same rattle...its either the X or Z... since the X is on the Z o guess vibrations are goin there... there is a small play betwwen the trapezoidal nut and the threaded Rod... i guess this is vibrating ... but this is just a guess...

+1 for the LCD display. The rattle stops when I push the part under the display rotary selector down. Will be fixing this 🙂

I have the rattling sound too. Mine is definitely coming from the part cooling fan. I don't think it likes to be mounted at 45 degrees or it needs a more robust support bracket. I'll see what me and Fusion 360 can come up with :).

Re: Rattling sound

I have the same issue just assembled mine a few days ago and have printed a few test prints.
In stealth mode the noise doesn't seem to be there.

Checked LCD doesn't seems to be an issue also went over every bolt everything is tight and square.
print quality is not bad however I feel it should be better maybe it has something to do with the noise or vibration.
Please help prusa

Re: Rattling sound

I built mine as well, and had/have a rattling noise. Mine seems limited to the LCD Cover which simply snaps on and is fairly loose all the time. I check that first then check all axis. Might give that a go.

Re: Rattling sound

My printer has the same rattle you can hear in the video and its been driving me nuts. I replaced the bearings and rods on the x and y axis trying to track it down. But now I think the issue is with the z-axis trapezoidal nuts.

While looking for the cause of another issue, I found that the trapezoidal nut on the idler side has more slop on the z axis screw thread then on the motor side. While printing, if I press my fingers between the trapezoidal nut and the z-axis screw on that side, the rattle completely goes away. I'm going to order replacements and see what happens.

Re: Rattling sound

Mine also HAD the same rattle until I printed an improved nozzle cooling shroud, where the fan sits vertically, I never liked the look of the original as it just did not seem to fit together perfectly, but now, no more rattle! and hopefully improved prints with PETG.
Oh I also added an E3D silicon Pro sock and recalibrated the PID, after the first print with PET and wiping PET off the nozzle, this was a must, currently printing first part with sock and improved cooling and so far so good, no buildup and subsequent zits.

Normal people believe that if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. Engineers believe that if it ain’t broke, it doesn’t have enough features yet.

RE: Rattling sound

chocki, could you post a link to the vertical fan shroud? I'm one of the many who aren't comfortable with the noises coming out of this fan at the 45 degree angle... never had any issue with fan noise before the MK2.5s upgrade.

Thanks...Van

RE: Rattling sound

My rattle was a loose "fan-shroud_MK3S" not helped by the attaching thread on the plastic "extruder-cover_R4" competing with the metal nut.  I reamed the hole/thread on the "extruder-cover_R4" used to attach it to "fan-shroud_MK3S" (with an M3 drill) - got rid of my rattle completely hope that helps

Blimey, that was a long time ago!, I've since completely modified my extruder to a skelestruder, which also has a vertically mounted fan.

Something else I've since found is that applying a drop of oil to the fan shaft silences it down for quite some time, before it starts to rattle again.

I guess the fan supplied is not of the highest quality, also continuing to oil it, well, the oil must be going somewhere, so I suspect it will eventually find it's way to places you don't really want it, like on your print or PEI sheet.

What I do is peel the sticker, unscrew the fan from the extruder, hold it horizontally so the shaft is uppermost, apply a drop of sewing machine oil to the side of the plastic clip, and using a finger move the fan (now underneath) up and down to help the oil get over the plastic clip and onto the shaft.

After a minute I use a little paper tissue to soak up the excess and refit the fan.

The other places for rattles are inside the PSU, there is a cover for the terminals that rattles and the worst one, is the front LCD case around the LCD itself. Some PVC insulation tape quietens this down and I ended up replacing my power supply with a bigger one anyway, so this got rid of the rattles from this.

Normal people believe that if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. Engineers believe that if it ain’t broke, it doesn’t have enough features yet.
