Prusa i3 missing steps and causing unfavorable print quality after re-homing.

I'm getting some bad print quality on the exterior perimeters of my prints, specifically circular perimeters. The printer recognizes that it has missed steps and does a homing procedure after the layer is complete but there is a gap in the extrusion on the outermost perimeters. I'm wondering if upgrading to stronger nema 17 motors would reduce the frequency of missed steps. I still have some THIC nema 17s from my reprap days.
