Prusa ABS preset in slice3r incorrect?
Hello everyone
New to the forum and new to 3d printing (1 weeks experience).
I have only tried ABS in the past two days (PLA and PETG easily sorted). I have a "Heath Robinson" cardboard box for an enclosure with a vent out the window. I am waiting to learn more about the MMU that I have ordered before building the enclosure.
Anyway, is the Prusa ABS preset incorrect in Slic3r? It has no fan engaged and I found it impossible to print the MK3 fan diverter without it. I now have it set with 25% fan and auto cooling on, print is perfect (after 10 or so disposables).
Any comments?

Keep a logbook or notebook of everything you do with your printer.
I now use this electronic sort on my iPad and iMac ( https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/notepad-cloud/id764761929?mt=12 as with advancing age my arthritis has caused my handwriting to become almost unreadable. but this has made it indexable and searchable.... others favor things like spreadsheets such as Google Sheets https://www.google.com/sheets/about/?utm_source=gaboutpage&utm_medium=sheetslink&utm_campaign=gabout
Using a 3D printer for me is still best treated as if you are doing science experiments or creating new recipes in your kitchen. Without good notes showing your set up and ingredients and process it is very hard to advance just by remembering what worked and what didn't .
There are so many variables between different providers of filament even if it is all called ABS or PLA the ABS from one company may not print the same as ABS from another. sometimes over looked is consistency in filament size... I got in the habit with my Delta printer when I started in this hobby back in 2015 of taking a meter or so of filament off of the reel and using a micrometer measuring it diameter every 10 to 20 cm and recording the average for input into the slicer and recording that data in the notes for that print.
It was not unusual, just three years ago, to see variations in diameter 2 or 3 times what we see today where a quality of ±0.05mm has become the norm... and size consistency has become a major point in choosing quality filament. Prusament PLA is our own in-house made filament. The whole manufacturing process is closely monitored and tested - we guarantee ±0.02mm precision and highly-consistent colors. You can inspect parameters of every spool we made at prusament.com. Check the sample spool!
this ±0.02mm precision will be come the new standard for quality filament quite quickly I predict and in 2 or 3 years it will be as common as ±0.05mm precision is today.
The changes over the last 3 years alone are large and with out good notes you will make the same mistakes over and over... eventually that experience will probably sink in to your subconscious memory enough that you are making consistently good prints but at my age i could not progress without my notes.

I have little experience with ABS myself, but in the extruder upgrade discussion ths topic came up and the general consensus was that ABS needs some cooling for a small part like the fan shroud. There've been several suggestions, from printing multiple pieces at the same time (giving the layers time to cool down) to switching on the fan. Both work. (I printed 2 shrouds at the same time)
It would be cool though if Slic3R would recognize the cooling issue on small parts and add fan automatically.
So not necessarily a bug, but one of the many things that you need to know to print successfully 😉

Perfect thanks, that sorts it.
