Printer keeps clogging after a few hours

Hi,

I completed my mk3 last week and successfully printed benchy and the gears etc as well as a 20h print of a box. When I tried to print the included triceratops skill the print failed due to the filament not extruding - the filament had broken around the gears and the extruder was clogged. I've tried for the last few days to get it working again but my prints always fail after a couple of hours with the extruder just clicking and being unable to turn. Sometimes the filament is broken where the gears mesh (see picture).

I've replaces the ptfe tube but i dont think this was the issue. I never have trouble clearing the resulting clog and the prints seem perfect until the layer where the extruder gets clogged.... I've checked fans and changed filament and nothing seems to work.

Any help would be appreciated - i'm stumped.

Thanks

That break at the gears looks pretty clean and I don't see any powder from grinding. Also, you say the clog clears easily. That makes me wonder if it's not a clog at all, but instead the filament getting snapped at the gears. Is the filament brittle? Does it pull through from the spool to the extruder easily?

Check the pin that holds your extruder idler gear in place in the idler door. It can get loose over time on the MK3.

Some other things that help MK3 print reliability:
Use a Straight Through or Micro Swiss Heat Break

Use Butterworths aligned extruder body:

RE: Printer keeps clogging after a few hours

I have the exact same issue with my MK3S. every 6 to 10 Hours of continuous printing on my print The printer seems to jam. And the extruder gear will do some clicking. If I do a. Filament change, it'll eject fine And Worked perfectly when I put the filament back in I've switched nozzles and re-slice the G code many times and Also tried many different nozzle temperatures just in case it's getting too cold. Seems to always have issues that are about at the same times/ layer height. It's a 21-hour print And I am using Prusa grey PLA filament. I can't figure out how to embed photos in this website. So here are my Google Photos links.

RE: Printer keeps clogging after a few hours

Hi Friends,

I'm having the same issues.
I have a 24h print and the printer (MK3S) stops feeding filament after about 6 h of printing.

I first thought that it might be a clogging. So I removed the old printhead, and instead of cleaning it I installed a new hotend.
Then I tried again and the same happend. It stopped feeding the filament after 6 h ... I then cleaned the printhead and thought it is the material.
That it might get hot and converts to glass hard. It was PETG and the top in the PTFE Tube was sticking to the tube.

So I changed the Material to PLA. I already have done a 48 h print with this PLA and it worked all fine.
But same Problem again. After about 6 h the printer stopped feeding the filament...

Did any of you found some solution to this problem?

Best Regards
Thomas
