Needing plastic parts for MK3 to MK3S+ upgrade - buy from store?
I bought an MK3 back in 2018, then I bought and installed the MMU2S upgrade, not realizing that it was not compatible with the MK3 (I didn't even know that multiple newer versions had been released, since the names are so similar!). So I ordered a MK3/S to MK3S+ upgrade kit, which unfortunately doesn't include the printed parts. I can't print the printed parts myself because of the MMU2S upgrade, so now I'm a bit stuck. Maybe I could unassemble the MMU2S upgrade to print the parts, but then I have to re-do the upgrade AND do the MK3->MK3S+ ugrade. Lots of opportunity for failure and frustration there!
I noticed in the shop that there are lots of individual replacement plastic parts available, including some marked as MK3S+ parts. If I were to buy all the parts listed in the MK3 to MK3S+ upgrade kit assembly guide from the store, would I end up with the same parts included in the MK3/MK3S->MK3S+ upgrade pack here? If so, I could grab those parts and try to do the MK3->MK3S+ upgrade with the MMU2S upgrade in place (pray for me, lol).

Hi Jason, don't you know any other 3D printer owners?

@joantabb A couple, yes, but none that I can just ask out of the blue to print things for me. I don't live in an area where 3D printing is all that common. My local makerspace has a few janky 3D printers, but I just got back from spending a few hours there trying to get just one of them to lay down a solid first layer of PETG for these parts - no dice. Ideally I would just order the parts and save some time, with a guaranteed level of quality.

In your case, I would simply disconnect the MMU2 from the system (disconnect power and data cable). Your printer will then work like a normal MK3. You don't have to change anything on the firmware.
Generally, it is also sufficient if you only remove RX and TX. This means that the MMU2 is no longer available for the MK3, since there is no longer any data exchange.

Thanks for the idea! I disconnected both the power and RT/TX cable headers, then I reflashed the main board with the MK3 firmware, since I had previously flashed it with the MK3 + MMU2 firmware, not realizing that there were two versions of the MMU2 (MMU2 and MMU2S).
I ran the built-in calibration wizard, and it failed at detecting the filament sensor. As I recall, the MMu2S upgrade process involved some part changes to the extruder (filament sensor, PINDA sensor, idler gear, plastic parts). Do I need to physically downgrade the filament sensor somehow, or is there a software trick I can do?

UPDATE: I reflashed my main board with the MK3S/MK3S+ firmware instead of the MK3 firmware, and it works! That kind of begs the question now why should I even install the MK3->MK3S+ upgrade kit if the machine is working now, but maybe there some important part upgrades that are necessary for the MMU2S 🤔

@jasonwebb
If you have also upgraded the printer (MK3 to MK3S with IR sensor), then you must use the MK3S firmware, since there is no optical sensor installed anymore.
