Mk3s stops print halfway and filament breaks at pulls and bond tech gear area help
Bought the assembled version of the mk3s but when it arrived i tried printing the prusa logo with no problems but after trying to print the frog model at 50um gcode that came with it the printer would print and stop randomly and the nozzle is jammed I opened up the extruded and found the filament broke at the gear area and after inserting new filament and even using a Allen key to push the remaining filament in the nozzle with it heated at 255°c it’s still jammed
Replaced the whole ptfe tube and tried again and had the exact same results help!
Re: Mk3s stops print halfway and filament breaks at pulls and bond tech gear area help
I am guessing that you do not have a collet lock on the top of the heat sink.
without it the ptfe tube can walk up a bit and create a tiny gap where it contacts the heat break and this can cause a clog that is a bit different from the sort that happen down at the nozzle end of the heat break in the heater block... also when you want to remove filament be sure to have it hot to the temperature for that plastic.... extrude a bit so you see it flowing out the nozzle then do the remove and be quick with your steady pull as it comes up.

I would hope by now they would be putting a collet lock on. at least for the assembled ones....
I have a Prusa,therefore I research.

I got mine as a kit early January and it didn't have a collet lock. Adding one is one of the many improvements that I plan on doing during the PM teardown when I apply my MK3s upgrade. (Looking like next weekend...) I got a pair of them for $0.50 added to my last Printed Solid order.

that is just sad. it was the first thing I had to deal with.

I would love to hear from a Prusa engineer what their reason is for omitting the collet lock.
My MK3 had a fault in the E3D V6 assembly that meant that i had to tear down the hot end twice in my first week of operation, when it was assembled at the factory either by E3D or by Prusa a tiny spec of swarf from the machining of the heat break was caught between the nozzle and the heat break inside the heater block this caused a leak that was mostly hidden under the silicone sock.
On my very first filament change after building my mk3 at the end of September i had the same filament break point as is seen in this new user's photo right below the Bondtech gears At the Time I had not known about Bob's trick with the1.5mm brass rod so I tried with a tiny allen wrench to push it through and got nowhere.
I think it is important to take the hot end down to install the collet lock in any case.

I ordered a bondtech FLS printed extruder upgrade, and it came with collet lock and STERN warnings to make sure to use it. And I did.
My printer prints better than it ever did, and it has not failed a print since the upgrade!
Collet lock is one of those things where such a small thing can prevent huge disasters!
Re: Mk3s stops print halfway and filament breaks at pulls and bond tech gear area help
I upgraded my I3 to the angled fan version extruder when I installed the mmu2 last December. My unit has trouble retracting filament, so I have poor success with multi color prints. Now my single color prints are skipping layers and not retracting filament. I think the PTFE tube is a little high in the extruder body as well. Would this PTFE pullback as described in previous posts be enough to cause these failures? My filament breaks just below the extruder drive gears, and the Bowden tube (mmu was to extruder) the end is distorted.
I think it is worth a tear down to see if the PTFE tube has pulled up in the heat exchanger.
I’m hoping others have some experience with this problem and can offer ideas to fix.
Where can I get the locks?
Thanks in advance to the help!

you can print one, of course!

Yes I can, now with your helpful link. I had done a quick google search with little luck.
Hope this helps others as well.
Thanks again!
