how do you learn what settings to use?

I opened up prusaslicer and dropped in a .stl file for the first time, but now I have many settings to manage.  Is there a way to learn how to choose the right settings for the printer?  How does one know how to pick the right settings?

thanks for the advice!!

kindredindustrial, I generally just use the default settings - I then only change a setting when I know what I am changing it for - what problem or finese I am trying to solve. I suggest you start with the default settings for you printer model and move on from there. Top right of Prusa Silcer are there option buttons: starting with Simple could be a good start for you. Pick an easy print to start with.

You read stuff, you try stuff, you have a problem then you ask for help and hopefully you learn stuff 🙂  Same with everything in life.

There are a couple of helpful videos, such as e.g. and

For starters, many people firing up an out-of-the-box printer with a .4mm nozzle will just print a ready-to-print stl from thingiverse or Josef Prusa. Make sure that you have the latest version of the Prusa Slicer. Open the slicer, import the stl. Chose the correct printer in the top left, chose some medium quality (like .15mm Quality print), chose the right filament from the menu, chose whether you need supports or not (things like the PRUSA sign, Joe´s dog or the little boat are designed to be printed without supports and brims, hit SLICE, export the generated gcode to the SD card, chose "Print from SD" and let the printer do his thing.

From then onwards, its learning by doing. Get to know your personal printer, its temperature stability, learn to understand print results and you will quickly understand to judge a good from a better print. Try different temps for the bed and the nozzle and see how the different settings bring different outcomes. ONE SETTING AT THE TIME TO BE CHANGED ONLY, otherwise you won´t understand the effect. Other than that, ask!

Regards

Chris

BTW, you will need to learn to understand the general stuff around this sort of 3D Printing. Knowing the terminology helps big time to find solutions. Check out https://cults3d.com/en/blog/articles/identify-correct-3D-printing-problems-defaults for a good start.
