First, with the power off, move the axis by hand; is it smooth? Does the resistance stay the same over the whole range?

If it's OK, the most likely cause of this error is something blocking the full travel of one or more axes, the common ones:

The printer is too close to a wall and the cable bundle is not free to move back.

Something is interfereing with the belts - is there a scrap of loose filament in the idler?

And, the No.1 suspect, the cable ties at the back of the extruder are not correctly positioned so they hit the frame or the power supply.

Is it X or Y axis? Most common error is caused by zipties hitting the frame at the ends of  X travel.
another possible cause is overtightened back plate on  X axis,
yet another is lack of lubrication
Over tightening of the Toothed belt,

x motor toothed wheel on back to front. (the correct way, is with the locking hub, towards the front of the printer (Counter intuitive))
Idler screw too tight preventing the idler rotating freely.
cables catching on something.
on the Y axis, the belt clamp can be back to front.
Most of the X axis options can apply to Y axis...
Y axis toothed wheel touching motor face.

Plenty to try...

To echo this.... If you have anything "nonstandard" anywhere, or are in a homegrown enclosure etc, this can certainly be your issue!  Manually checking travel can help you locate/remember.

In my case, had to repair the print head , afterwards saw errors, and could not calibrate z over and over.  Turns out it was a small smoke detector I mounted to the back of the printer!  Moved it 2.54 inches and tada, fixed!

Frustrated me for a day too!

When I had this problem with my newly assembled printer, it ended up being that my belts were too tight.
