First layers smaller

Hello.

I have tried to search both the internet and the forums, but not sure what search words to use. I have just assembled my mk3 and the very first print was a flawless buddy from the provided SD card. I then moved to my computer and downloaded a few files which I sliced in Prusa Slic3er (latest version).

"Stock" settings, just sliced and exported the g-code. I print with Prusament Galaxy Black, so that's the only parameter I put in. It should also be noted that since my card reader is dead, I sent the files over with Pronterface (I know what you're going to say about printing via USB, it's only temporary).

So I've printed two different files, sliced in the same way. The first layers are smaller in width equally all around the model, then back to normal in the layers above - in lack of better words. It doesnt seem like layershifting, since it's equal on all sides.

The print I have running now has the same thing, and the difference in width is equal to the scale relative to the model, so not the exact same layer height, but the same height relative to the model - in lack of a better explanation.

You might start by cleaning the bed so that the detail does not lift in the corners.
Wash the bed with detergent and water (not with alcohol), wipe with paper.
Avoid taking your fingers on the bed so the filament will attach properly.

I used windex.

Yes, Windex is good for PETG, but Galaxy Black is PLA, and there you only use Isopropanol 99%.
Whatever the material, it is necessary to have a basic cleaning of the bed.
If the bed has a slightly oily surface (fingerprint) then it does not help with only Isopropanol or Windex (for PETG).

I appreciate the answers, but I am aware of this. I was printing with PTEG right before the PLA, and don't have any Isopropanol at hand right now. All I wanted to know was why my first layers was of a lesser dimension than the rest, not why the corners lifted.

Re: First layers smaller

If you have printed with PETG and used the Windex, you must clean the bed before printing with PLA.
You clean the bed with detergent and water, not isopropanol. Isopropanol can be used between the prints (if needed).

All I wanted to know was why my first layers was of a lesser dimension than the rest, not why the corners lifted.

The reason for your problem is probably that the print will lift from the bed and the layers will then be compressed.
So my tip remains, wash the bed with detergent and water.

Re: First layers smaller

Thank you for your feedback. I have now cleaned the bed, and tested several prints but the problem remains. It seems that the print is smaller as the same height of the bottom shell, meaning, if I print a bowl, the floor of the bowl, i.e 5mm thick (or "tall"), will have a smaller diameter than rest of the print. Is there any setting for tighter shells on the first layer or something I've missed. I have a really hard time explaining this in english, so bear with me.

RE: First layers smaller

I know that this is an old post but anyway.

I just assembled my printer and had the same issue, first two layers smaller all around X and Y(Z axis hight is perfect).

Printing PLA with 0.15 Quality @MK3 profile.

I slowed down to think about this 🙂

I opened Prusa Slicer and found "Elephant foot compensation = 0.2mm"

Because my bed was almost perfectly leveled (not squished first layer at all) my X and Y were smaller.

I reduced Elephant foot to 0.05 and now everything is perfect
