First layer sudden drop in nozzle.

On about 80% of my print attempts the first layer prints perfectly and then after about 30% of the first layer the nozzle lowers and drags on the bed. It does this spontaneously. What could be the cause of this? This also clogs the nozzle.

I solved the problem by forcing a zip tie up between the extruder body and the orange housing. That , for now, keeps the extruder from dropping down. At first I thought it was an electrical problem.

If your printer is assembled correctly there is no way the nozzle can move position. I suspect that perhaps the hotend assembly is not fitted correctly into the extruder body.

Go back and re-examine the extruder assembly instructions and photos and compare them to your printer. It is very easy to insert the hotend in the wrong place which I imagine could produce the effect you are experiencing.

If you are not sure please post pics of your extruder from front and side so we can see the location of the hotend.
