First Benchy print - advice appreciated!

Hi Everyone,

This is my first benchy - it seems to have a few issues and I would appreciate any feedback.

I used the benchy print file from the SD card and the PLA that was supplied with the MK3/S kit.

Cheers

Here are my thoughts.

Looking on the bottom of the benchy.  You can see where the upper layers, bridging the text, have contacted the build plate.  The Z offset is probably too high, resulting in the first layer being extremely squished, and the second layer being close enough to the build plate that the normal droop in the bridging allows it to contact the plate.  It is also possible that the print is over-extruding a bit, making the bridging bulge down more and contact the plate.  Hard to say more there without a first layer calibration square for reference.  Over extrusion might also contribute to some of the stringing elsewhere.  Below are a couple of benchy bottom shots.  The first one had the Z offset too low, so the first layer wasn't squished quite enough.  The second is a more properly calibrated first layer.

You definitely have some issues higher up.  The sides of the wheel house should be straight.  Yours appear a bit... wavy.  My first thought is that your belts are way too loose, resulting in poor X-Y accuracy, especially in short, fast moves that occur while printing the wheel house.  For comparison, here are some pictures of what it should look like.

@william-m51

Thank you so much for your feedback!

I will tweak the z-offset - despite looking at pictures in the manual it's hard to gauge how it should look! I'll keep playing til I get it right.

With regards to the belt tension, could one be too loose and one too tight? My Belt status values are: X-228 Y-276

Wavy is a great way to describe it 🤣

@quokkavibes

What is your first layer cal like? I found the easiest way to set that was to print it and then use some digital callipers to measure the thickness. Then adjust to get to 0.2mm. e.g if the measure is 0.27  with an offset of say -0.64 then add 0.07 to your offset to make it -0.71. Way easier than trying to determine if its squished enough etc

For belt tension, i just used the pinch the belt method to decide if it was to tight or to loose then printed off an X,Y, Z calibration cube and again use the callipers to measure it. Mine came out within hundredths of a mm so was happy. 🙂
