Filament will not extrude first time

I've assembled the printer ran through the calibration and attempted to load filament but it just will not load. I preheat to the temperature for the including PLA filament. I've tried adjusting the tension screws many different ways tried forcing the filament in. Nothing will work. The filament isn't even going in far enough to get warm. the gears push it in so far then just click and it will not go any further. When forcing the filament down it goes further than the gears will push it but still not far enough down to even get warm. I tried pushing the included needle up the nozzle and it goes in fine and feels like nothing is inside clogging that part.

I've tried everything I've seen from googling and on the forums and just cannot come up with anything as a solution. I've been at it nearly 8 hours trying to fix this after 9.5 hours of building. It just will not work.

Re: Filament will not extrude first time

Hello, I am going to go though what I call Rolling "Yes" Questions in that your answer should be yes. They may seem basic but in my work life I help people over the phone so I learned don't assume anything :D.
-Preheat is 215c 😛
-The bondtech gears are meshed correctly
-The filament is 1.75mm diameter
- The filament is straight and does not have a nob at the end. You can cut it at an angle so that is slightly pointy.
- The PTFE tubing is in place in the printing head assembly and it is directional so you have a tapered end that goes in first and all the way down and a wider end that stick out. It should stick out to just short of the bondtech gears.

-. If you loose on the bondtech gear ,, turn off filament sensor and put a piece of filament down with the temp at 215C do you fill it hit or does start to go through. I have put is through very easily and melted filament comes out the end. If you measure it from the very top to where it melts is approximately 4 inches. Measure how far it goes down and let me know.
I will check your response and give you a POA (Plan of Action)

I did everything you post asked and was already right. I then put the filament down with the cover open. measuring from the top of the PETG tubing that the two gears feed into my filament will go down 2 inches and then will not go any further at all no matter how much force is applied. I if put the needle into the nozzel while the filament is 2 inches deep I do not feel the filament or any blockage.

Here is a video of the clicking noise.

Re: Filament will not extrude first time

That initial clicking and the bolt head positions suggest the extruder idler tension is too high. It should not click even before it moves the filament significantly. Might also be the extruder idler axle not engaging both pillars. Check that as well. Axle pin should be equally inside from both sides.

Now as for the not getting anything through the extruder, not even manually pushing....

You clearly have something blocking the teflon tube or the tube itself bent over itself.

Remove the extruder and check the teflon tub. If it isn't bent, remove it and check in the teflon.

Remove the extruder and pull out the PTFE tub.
Check what is creating an obstruction in the tube at 2 inches from its top end.

Actually, hard to imagine something getting stuck in there on a brand new assembly, but you clearly have something blocking inside the PTFE tube.
Maybe some debris go into there?

If i remove it the tube will go back in right?

Re: Filament will not extrude first time

Yes the teflon tube is only friction fit inside the extruder. There is a collar at the top which will grab the tube (IF you install a collar lock). Prusa does not ship with a collar lock. So nothing actually holds the PTFE tube in place except friction.

Sorry, I made an edit after you read my original response. Please also check what I commented about the clicking. I think that is a separate issue.

Just got the tube out and unscrewed the circular part of the heating element and found something like a black pebble in the nozzle part where the wires heat up.. I know it wasn't my filament because it's grey. hopefully it works not after reassembly.

well im out of luck the red wire broke while removing the blockage that came in my printer. Any chance it can be replaced?

Re: Filament will not extrude first time

I'll bet it was a piece of PETG debris that was in the extruder body. It probably broke loose and fell into the teflon tube as you inserted the e3d hotend.

Red wire - you broke one of the red wires for the heating cartridge. Ouch. Sorry to hear about that mishap.

Where is the break? If it is farther away from the cartridge, you can solder and fix the break. It it's right at the cartridge, you have to replace the heater cartridge. If its replacement, time to chat with Prusa. However, first check if your heater cartridge will even come out of the heat block. Sometimes it is stuck even if the grub screw is loosened. Some people end up swapping out the entire hot end with thermistor, heating cartridge and all.

I think this will work if you can't get from Prusa reasonably. It has to be 24 volt 40 watt cartridge

Yeah where it broke doesn't seem solderable. It's real shame. Thanks for that link if I can't get something from customer support i'll pick that up. You really were a lifesaver even though im in worse shape now. My issues are 100% fixable now and I know what they are.

Re: Filament will not extrude first time

Hang in there. You're going to get the machine up and running.
Putting it together from the kit means you know it inside and out - better for fixing or upgrading things later.

Since I didn't warn you about the wires...

When replacing the heat cartridge, look out for the thermistor wires and don't mechanically stress the heat break. That has a narrow neck you don't want to snap.

It will be a fun machine to use and tinker on. I'm 30 miles from home and remotely starting a print job now. 😀
