Degreasing The Linear Bearings Before Assembly
Hi all...I am new to Prusa, though not to 3D printing, and this is my first post here!
I am awaiting the arrival of my mk3s kit and have been doing some reading in the meanwhile about the upcoming assembly. As has been often suggested here, I plan to clean the linear bearings and regrease them with Super Lube prior to assembly. My question is in regards to cleaning the bearings first, i.e. removing the oil that comes pre-supplied on the bearings, before applying the Super Lube.
It is suggested to use 99% IPA to do this, however at present it is very difficult for me to source. However, I do have a good quantity of 70% IPA on hand. Would this be suitable for cleaning the bearings, assuming I then immediately dried them and applied the Super Lube so as to avoid the onset of any rust? Or is it absolutely necessary to step up to 91 or 99 percent IPA?
Thanks for your input!
Best, Alan
RE: Degreasing The Linear Bearings Before Assembly
70% IPA is no option for degreasing. The IPA will evaporate during drying and the water content will remain inside the bearings.
You should degrease and dry them properly before regreasing. Try to source 99.8% IPA in your local pharmacy. Pharmaceuticle grade IPA is around 10-15€ and their suply chain is the fastest (depending where you life) 😉

@titoha
What is the proper procedure for drying them? Doesn't 99% IPA evaporate pretty fast?
RE: Degreasing The Linear Bearings Before Assembly
Update -- I was able to source some 99% IPA from a medical supply company. Got 2 x 16 oz. bottles for $15 shipped. Best I could find.
