[Build Problems] E-Exis FS-Cover Assembly Issue

Greetings Prusa Forum Crew!

I'm a new owner of a MK3s Kit. Love it so far. Elegant design, really - bravo.
Having lots of fun building it with my kids. So far, so good.

Last night we worked on the E-Axis chapter - and we completed it, but I've gotten to a point where the FS-Cover Assembly screw is not biting, and the cover just sits on top. Step 42: https://manual.prusa3d.com/Guide/5.+E-axis+assembly/1055?lang=en#s18584

I suppose I'm not reaching the nut with the provided screw (and while I am using version 3.11 of the printed manual, I swear the little (i) note wasn't there on my version). So, I'm going to try that when I get home tonight.

Can anyone point to the step that inserts the referenced nut? I would like to verify it is actually in there, or maybe fell out?

I suppose others have already run in to this?

Thanks!

Re: [Build Problems] E-Exis FS-Cover Assembly Issue

It worked OK for me.

I just finished printing a complete set of spares, and looking at the Extruder Body I can tell you that this particular embedded nut is a pretty tricky one. There is no "well" beneath the nut for the bolt to extend beyond the nut. So the bolt has to reach the nut and engage it, but the bolt can only thread into the nut for the thickness of the nut. Which means you can't use a bolt longer than the specified 10mm, nor will a shorter bolt work; it needs to be exactly 10mm.

If you hold the FS-cover part in your hand and insert the screw, does the head of the screw insert all the way into the part so the top of the bolt head is flush with the top of the cover? If not, maybe the counter-sink hole in the cover needs a little cleaning.

If you take a flashlight and look down into the hole in the top of the Extruder body, can you see the nut? Is it centered so the threads of the bolt will engage it? If not, use a small Allen wrench to nudge the nut into place.

If I can't see this nut, and am pretty sure it fell out somehow, is there any alternative to completely disassembling the E-axis and rebuilding it?  How critical is the nut?  Could I put a little "stickum" of some sort in there to hold the bolt?

Find the nut... Stickum not recommended.

Since you are in the middle of building your kit - lubricate those bearings.

While not recommended, I resorted to using rubber cement to tack nuts in place during assembly.  So far it hasn't stopped me from fixing things when needed.

Heck - I use super glue. Some of those nuts just like to fall out.

Holding it in place until the screw grabs it is a lot different than using glue to replace the nut.

lol - yeah - agree I'd probably not use glue to replace a nut; a bit larger diameter screw that cuts threads into the extruder though?  Maybe. After all, it is just a dust cover for the sensor assembly. depends on how badly I wanted to avoid doing it right.

The nut is most likely not deep enough in its place. If everything failed, you have to disassemble some parts of the extruder to reach this nut.

Some nuts I had to move into place with an awl. And some needed that glue to keep them there...
