After 3.11.0 firmware update: First Layer Z height cal print perfect, First Layer on a print is rubbish

After a couple of years of near perfect PETG printing. I had some time and updated to 3.11.0. for some new prints.

The first layer of the prints were impossible, not sticking and blobbing all over...

The printer had not been used for a while so I cleaned the plate with ALL the tricks and nothing worked.

I reset the First Layer Z height and adjusted for near perfect cal prints in the routine. It was very difficult to lift the PETG off so it was sticking real good and no blobbing at all.

Going back to do my prints, it appears that the Z Calibration has had no effect at all... Still not sticking and blobbing all over the place??? It is like the Z calibration is being ignored on a live print.

Is there any spot where I need to punch in the Z cal offset into the software? I thought it might have been the filament going off but the z cal is perfect?

Please show us a picture of a failed print with blobbing, the underside of a failed print and your first layer Z calibration print.

Thank you for taking the time Diem,

The print.

The plate was cleaned with;

  • Windex
  • Alchohol
  • White spirits
  • Metholated spirits
  • Glue stick
  • Glue stick and Metholated spirits to film the glue. I did get a successful PLA print using this technique.
  • Acetone

Z calibration after washing. If the nozzle was too close to the surface I found the PETG really was very difficult to lift off. With some adjustment,  it would lift off with some force, but not excessive.

Happy with the Z calibration I attempted to do the print. It did not stick. Notice the dull patches from the Z calibration...

I had read about using hot water and dishwashing liquid but had not used that technique. I used hot water straight out of the tap, dishwashing liquid and thick rubber gloves to prevent burning. And I got my print. The reason the Z calibration was working is that it repeated over the same area effectively degreasing that particular surface area with each cal print.

Extremely happy that I am back using this fantastic printer. 👍
