Upgraded my MK3S to MK3S+ and am struggling to get first layers....

In a fit of madness I decided to upgrade my MK3S to MK3S+. I ordered the kit and printed off the bits I needed.

I already have a MK3S+ but wanted the second printer to be the same spec.

I followed the guide from Prusa and to be honest, that went pretty well.  However when I try to print I'm really struggling to get a good first layer down as part of the calibration and was hoping somebody could advise me please.

I've done the Calibrate Z axis and that worked Ok, no issues with the Calibrate XYZ either or the belt test.

However when i  tried the Calibrate first layer, I have ended up with a Z level of circa -1.9. I say circa as I've been up to -2.1 and down to -1.85 and it all looks rubbish. I normally use the square printing test that I found on here and gently tweak the Z level when I change plates or nozzle and thats been pretty good.

My worry is that since I've changed the Y axis mounts (and why do Prusa supply countersunk bed screws made of cheese?), that and the change of Pinda to SuperPinda plus all new Extractor prints, I'm now completely uncertain where to go to try and fix this.

I cannot get the first layer down consistently in the square, it seems to lift at one corner and then it drags with the nozzle. Sometimes its rough as well.

Simply not sure of the order to test things and the Prusa website doesn't really help me.

Should the SuperPinda be lower or higher. -2 seems very high when it was -1.5 before I screwed around. Should I start here or look at checking the bed level.

Any and all advice welcomed.

Thanks

Rob

Thanks, here's photos of the square on the bed and off.I had used Orange filament before so thats why there is a bit of orange here from the mess last time 🙂

Normally the square is pretty solid, as can be seen from the last pictures, it's thin. I would normally make the Z value more negative her, but since it's close -2, I'm worried that this a very high number. I lowered it to the thickness of a cable tie as stated in the Prusa instructions. Not sure I can lower it any further TBH.

Yes it should be slightly Lower then a cable tie so lower it just a bit and reset the first layer value to 0 and redo from there I guarantee you need to lower pinda

If your Z value is too large of a negative number, should you not raise the pinda slightly, rather than lower it?  This will put the nozzle lower to start with when the live Z is reset to zero.

Thanks both of you for the reply. One is to lower the Super Pinda and one is to raise the Super Pinda.

I know I'm going to struggle to lower the Pinda as it's only the thickness of a thin cable tie off the bed.

So which way to go I go? I have two bits of advice that are the opposite of each other.

Happy to try something but not sure what now.

Confused and bewilded.

Not stupid, the relationship between pinda height and live z value is kind of counter-intuitive.

Hi,

Moved the Super Pinda up around 1-2 rings. Very small amount and started Calibrate Z again.

Things look a lot better, the X value is now -1.1 as opposed to -2.1. Also the printed square looks like a square and is clean.

I'm happy with that. I suspect I might get it a little better, but we're on the margins now.

Appreciate all the help,

Thanks
