Windows 7 or 10 for new MK2?

Any thoughts on whether to run Win7 or 10 on PC to run new MK2? I have both available and am building a PC to run the new printer. I currently use Win7 Ulti and S3D for my other printers (FFCP's and QIDI's).

I read a review a while back about Win 10 supporting the printer.

Thanks!!

The printer's drivers are M$ certified and when using Windows 10, it can apparently be set as a printer for the Win10's 3D printing APP.

Personally, I use Win7, my choice of slicer and CAD tool and like many others, I send the GCode to Octoprint to take care of the printing.

I prefer Windows 7 for a few reasons. One is because of forced upgrades. You are always forced to do Windows Updates, there is no way to turn them off or delay them anymore with Windows 10. The other reason I prefer Windows 7 over Windows 10 is the privacy issues. Another problem I have with Windows 10, is the missing media center programs.

and an 8 inch (200mm) or greater caliper is recommended.

I do believe that it is possible to turn off forced updates; my biggest issue is tha M$ now use your PC to pass on updates to others (peer-to-peer, similar to torrent). Although this can also be turned off (with great difficulty) until it is, M$ are taking up your broadband bandwidth (in some cases metered) to update possibly hundreds of other PCs.

The newest Win10 update wont by default update over metered connections.

As for the peer-to-peer scenario, just:

Start Button > Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update > Advanced > Choose How Updates Are delivered > And turn off "Updates from more than one place."

The setting for local network or internet users is irrelevant if you shut it off, but setting it for local computers first you can do just to be technical.

Forced updates can be set up to defer, but as of 1511v you can modify how and when they do come. Being sneaky you can set it for a 1 hour window and also when the computer is idle. You dont have to suffer restarts when you least expect it anymore.

For advanced users:

Start Button > Windows System > Run > Type: services.msc
Look for "Windows Update" and first stop the service, then set it's properties to "disabled" (manual might work too, it used to)

Keep in mind it's not a good idea to go too long without updating. Contrary to popular belief most updates are good things. Just repeat the process and set it to auto and reboot to go back to getting updates as normal.

I will avoid win10 as long as they force updates and I can't choose which ones to install. I have specific hardware that windows tries to update drivers for and if that happens it grenades windows and I have to re-install.

If you're building a new rig 'bird and using current hardware you shouldn't have driver issues. Good luck though, OS choices aren't always cut and dry and theres a ton of variables that can determine choice. Personally, I cant stay behind because of other work I do. I miss the old days. Hehe

I have current hardware but it is not exactly "off the shelf" and windows update tries to update with stuff that breaks windows. I have tried it with win 10 and it is a no go. I can put in the drivers etc. that I need but then win 10 (or win 7) tries to change it.
We should at least be able to control non Microsoft specific updates such as drivers or other things that aren't core OS items.

I am waiting to see how we will handle this at work on an enterprise level. they are going to have to give us control of updates and how we apply them in that environment!

Like I said, you can get the benefits of the OS and shut down updates. I'm glad I no longer am at the front line with customer support and giving speeches to corporate IT, me being from the punch card era and also as cutting edge as Elon Musk in MO. (laughs) It got to be a headache locking horns with everyone who knows everything but the systems on their end not working. I just wanna do my thing and help out selectively where I have my drinks at so to speak. Anyways:

This oughta help both at home and work if you read it over. I almost typed it all up and out of laziness found the same info thankfully.

Hope that helps out some.

Definitely a good one to know but unfortunately Win 10 still ignores this at times!!
I think Microsoft will eventually have to give update/driver install control back to the user at least in the upper end versions like pro, enterprise. I know they want to make sure important updates get installed but usually when someone is intentionally managing what to install they know what they are doing, at least to some degree.
I know I review all updates before installing. There are some that will crash some systems because they don't work well with certain installed software.

We do at work also. We do a lot of testing of updates before we push them to the 800 plus workstations running.

Anyway, Win 7 will be around for a while!

Re: Windows 7 or 10 for new MK2?

Not arguing, but since 1511 I havent seen a single bypass of the self activated hardware updating on a pretty descent number of machines I handle. Now I'm kind of intrigued.

I agree, and its constantly mulled over at MS about the driver handling. From what I see, they will cave, as they should. 😉
