Strange Noise Coming From the Extruder

I just got a roll of Colorfabb Ngen filament to test, so I started printing the 3D Hubs Marvin to test the temperature, speed, etc. Up until the half of the print, it was going perfectly then I started hearing this noise;(google drive video)

https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B5RfRYbMywnwbkVhNTVtcFRibjg

I let it print the piece and it printed it perfectly. Then I started another print, this time something bigger. For 2.5 hours, the machine worked flawlessly, no strange noise or anything like that. Then it started making this noise again. But this time it's not as bad as the video. It happens once in a while.

What could be causing this? Between the prints, I went around the extruder, motors, checked to see if there was anything loose and tightened up the screws a little bit. I don't know if Ngen is the issue, or just a coincidence but hope someone knows what's going on

Re: Strange Noise Coming From the Extruder

I can't see your video because I don't have (or want) a google account. So this is just a guess.

Your words describe a partial blockage in the extruder - I would check two things:

1) Make sure the tension on your extruder screws is good - 14mm without filament in it - some filaments are much more sensitive to this than others - if the filament is deformed by the hob gear it can create blockages below.
2) Try dropping the temperature 5 to 10 degrees and trying again. If the new filament softens too early (up in the cold break) it will create blockages. Dropping the temperature can prevent that softening, preventing the clog.

Any advices given are offered in good faith. It is your responsibility to ensure that by following my advice you do not suffer or cause injury, damage or loss. If you solve your problem, please post the solution…

Believe me I don't want a google account as well, using the one provided to me by my school only for purposes like this 😀

I just saw your reply and the issue was the idler tension so you guessed it right. I think it was too tight, I opened it up completely and rescrewed back with paying extra attention to the 14mm, and it's been working fine ever since.

Thank you for your help though!
