Spiral Vase problem

I was trying to test some new filament and so I attempted to print a vase in spiral vase mode. I simply selected the 0.2 mm slicer settings and switched it to spiral vase.

During the print the extruder head is spiraling far to high and then resetting lower again on each pass. Updated to the newest firmware a couple of days ago(3.0.8), re-calibrated(XYZ and mesh bed) and it still does this. Prints that are not spiral vase appear to work fine.
Anyone have any ideas?

Model in question: http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:110804
Video of printer doing weird things:

This is the kit version so this could be the wrong subforum, either way I have a series of prints that came out fine it's just this model and/or the spiral vase that is causing problems

Re: Spiral Vase problem

Are you using Slic3r?
I have the same problem with vase mode.

To me that looks like a calibration issue. It looks like it thinks the bed is higher on one side of the bed and makes adjustments for it. Massive ones at that though and I would expect to see the adjustments much smaller if it was a calibration issue so its going to be a gcode/setup issue.
Try using a different slicer and as you are using a simple vase model try with no special modes selected.

Yes, using the version of Slic3r that came with the printer. All other settings besides checking spiral vase(and the subsequent things it changes) are the Prusa defaults. Sure seems like we have the same problem

What kind of calibration issue would possibly allow me to print everything else, but not allow me to do spiral vase on such a simple model?
Two of these models came with the printer, so if it were a calibration issue I would expect them to be messed up. One of these models had the gcode generated by me so if it were a normal slic3r issue I would expect it to be messed up too.

Just to be thorough I have re-sliced it not in spiral vase to see what happens, print's pretty normally. So either Slic3r is bugged in spiral vase mode, the Prusa firmware is bugged when it comes to spiraling, calibration does not work the way I expect it to, or something has gone terribly wrong.

Any other thoughts as to what is going wrong?

Re: Spiral Vase problem

Post the problem GCODE and we can look at it in a previewer. Maybe that will show the problem?

Definitely a problem in the gcode!

Hey that's not me! Although I'll bet my gcode is similar, which raises the question of why did slic3er generate it like that?

Re: Spiral Vase problem

That IS your gcode. I just did a preview in Simplify3D of it. Looks like a pretty nasty Slic3r bug. If you post the STL I'll try slicing it with S3D.

Lol, no no that's martin's GCode. Mines at home but him and I suffer from a very similar sounding issue. The model I used I posted in the top of this thread and all I did was use the version of Slic3r from here and checked spiral vase

Re: Spiral Vase problem

It is not a pretty model, but it proved a good enough test print.

So my real question at this point is does Prusa's version of Slic3r butcher things in spiral vase mode or is it something that Martin and I did?

Re: Spiral Vase problem

My initial reaction is that it is a bug in Slic3r. I can't imagine there is anything in an STL that would cause that. Do you have a pointer to the design or can you post the STL? I'd like to see what Simplify3D does with it.

I can post all of my generated files for that model in 5-6 hours.

Re: Spiral Vase problem

Well, I sliced the stl with both Slic3r (Prusa version) and Simplify3D. Slic3r made a mess, S3D looks OK. Maybe I'll try printing the S3D version tomorrow ...

So it definitely appears to be a Prusa Slic3r issue then. Is there anyplace we can report this as a bug or do we just hope they look here?

Re: Spiral Vase problem

Printed fine how? In a normal slice? With which slicer? With spiral vase? With which slicer?

If you did use Prusa's slic3r did you do anything other than checking spiral vase?
