So the new dual and quad system has arrived.

Now we know what has arrived does anyone know what we actually get from the kit?
I am going to pre order but want to know what is going to be in the box. Will the spool holders be in the box or do I need to print this prior? 😀

Can we now stop going on about the twisting every time someone wants to put led's, spool holders or tool box's on the frame and take back all those negative comments about the frame twisting? I think Josef has proven his design is good enough to hold 4 steppers weighing around 200grams a piece without twisting!

Who's going for beta testing? OR will that be all us who have pre-order 😆 I would apply but to be completely honest, feel those with more experience and those who would use 4 material print should apply. I for one will get the quad but mostly use 2 only.

I am going to have to rethink the enclosure now as the extruders would hit the top 😯 I like a nice diy challenge. 😈

It would be fantastic to see what type of softwares are available to support this so we can have a little play around prior to receiving.

Ben

We do know that Vojtech was brought into Prusa Research to look after the development of Slic3r, so I would presume that slicer will be able to generate the correct GCode for a quad extruder system.

As you know, I use KISSlicer, which is already quad-extruder capable.

No idea about the beta program, but this is definitely something which needs to be implemented otherwise we would have the same situation as with the V2 😉

I think you are right; there are probably a very limited number of users both capable of beta testing and interested in multi-filament extrusion.

Peter

P.S. I have no idea what twisting you are referring to. The frame is 6mm dural... That really is no going anywhere.

Hi Peter

Heres a few threads with the mention of it twisting in some way or another. I completely agree, it is not going anywhere.

http://shop.prusa3d.com/forum/improvements-f14/tool-box-for-mk2-t1480.html

Just to link a few. Hopefully now these comments will be eradicated.

I have noticed on the slic3r settings that it can deal with more extruders. I use Slic3r and love it so if they do go with it for slicing that will be handy. Slic3r supports are rubbish but as they can be soluble now who cares. 😀

Do you know what, I have changed my mind. I have emailed to be a Beta tester. I cant say I have any designs, would print full time with 4 materials BUT I would represent almost 90% (made up) of the actual buyers of the upgrade. Unless I am mistaken and every user has 4 material designs they were waiting to print with and always print with 4 materials 😕 Having the quad or dual would certainly make me want to try design and print numerous things. Plus I am completely open and honest about what I see and use 😮 😆

Is Prusa leaving it a little late to be Beta testing? Its only a month away from release unless that now gets put back.

Re: So the new dual and quad system has arrived.

Ben

Thanks. I think I may have had a tendency to ignore the posts discussing the frame warping 😉

I have just noticed that Slic3r is not being amended for the multi-extruder setup and that PR have produced a post processing routine (which can be called by the slicer) to do the clever bits.

I think you would be an ideal Beta tester - you would certainly find all the problems 😀

Thing is, they asked to 30 testers and then they have potentially hundreds or even thousands of pre-orders of this upgrade. Even if they start shipping in November, the orders will not be cleared until early next year, so some hoping for delivery before Christmas may well be disappointed.

And now I note that Lulzbot users are looking at this upgrade...

Hi Peter

And I was hoping you don't realize that I am thinking about adding the kit to both my printers 😀

But serious:
I agree that there will be a lot of people ordering and with that it will be extremely challenging for Jo to make all of them happy before Christmas.
Maybe Jo can provide for those who want it as Christmas present a Kind of multicolor printed Voucher? 😀

All the Best
Frank

Saw it in action. Great design and implemetation. However going over to effectively a Bowden extruder system seems a huge change. Especially with new electronics and up to four extruder motors and of course new firmware/software. I will not be ordering this upgrade until throughly tested by others.

Is the reel rack included in the upgrade kit price? Reel spool sizes vary, can it accomodate various spool sizes. Busy people at the stand I forgot to ask some questions. At the time I was there.

Thanks for the piccy Merv 😉

Yes I feel the same about it. I feel the early buyers will be the actual Beta testers and this forum will be flooded with problems that no one else knows how to fix because they have not got one yet. I think the Beta testers need at least 2 months to test.

Re: So the new dual and quad system has arrived.

Looking good! 😎 I'm a bit nervous of a Bowden system but at this time Quad Direct Drive is out of the question due to motor size and weight... Roll on the Prusa i33 MK6... 😆

I think the hardest part will be learning to model for 4-colour extrusion... 😕

I'd love to be a beta tester but not in a good place (mental wise) right now to take on the commitment... 🙁

RE: Twisting - When I have mentioned it, it is not the idea of the frame bending that worries me, it's the idea of one sided weight 'tipping' the frame, but then I'm not an engineer and to my eyes those nuts holding the z-frame look so flimsy... but no I will "Trust in Prusa"... 😀

I did manage to ask the question when there was a quieter moment, rack is included, but is still being finalised to make sure it will accommodate as many reel sizes as possible, so it may look a little different to the one in the photos.

Nice one Gordon 😉

I guess they could make a universal holder and we print the certain fittings for special spools.
