Shipping table for the multicolor kit?

Could we please have a shipping table for the multicolor upgrade kit, as the one you made with the printer?

I really look forward to printing in multiple colors.. mine was ordered november 15.

Best regards,
Klaus - Norway.

There is a comment on here from them about releasing an article about it and still revising. https://m.facebook.com/PrusaResearch/ . Check the post about 3d printing trends.

Re: Shipping table for the multicolor kit?

AFAIK there is not yet a date for shipping to start so it would not be possible to create a shipping table as yet.

Multi-material does work (you may have seen some photos I have uploaded in this thread: http://shop.prusa3d.com/forum/hall-of-fame-best-3d-prints-f15/adalinda-4-colour-t3094.html ) but unfortunately, there are still a few issues to be resolved.

You probably are not allowed to talk about it, but in your opinion, are those issues big ones? Or small ones?

If you want you can also tell us more than that 🙂

PR just posted that on facebook:

For me, it's working very well. Only issues I have had this year is with out of spec filaments (poorly extruded, too large diameter). Even PVA has worked fine for me, until it went too large a diameter to feed properly. Yes, PVA is very stringy but that may well be controllable by changing temp/speeds - I gave up with the roll I purchased (eSun) when I realised it was poorly extruded.

To cut down on waste (which some may find to be a big deal), you really need all the changes at lower layers where possible - such as printing logos on parts, ensure logo is on the bottom.

Most of my prints were sliced with KISS and post-processed with my own program; I found KISS much more multi-extruder-friendly and has many more related features than Slic3r. The provided post-processor did not work well with KISS-sliced GCode.

Overall, I would suggest that the MM upgrade is certainly not for the novice user; there are a whole load of extra "gotchas" waiting in the wings that need to be overcome.

Is it making it harder to print with one color too?
Or just when you do multicolor?

Well, a Bowden system IMVHO has more issues than a direct extruder system.

Retraction values have to be set higher, I have found printing thin, tall objects somewhat problematic and I have also experienced festo/tubing failure 3 times when printing higher volumes (8mm^3 or more). When printing objects over 150mm, the tubes are very bent. For large X movements, the tubes twist in the festos which cause the tubes to deteriorate at the ends.

I do prefer a direct extruder but there is no easy way to quickly switch from one to the other.

It does have advantages though. I can have 4 different colours or filament types ready to print and select the extruder to use within the slicer.

Thank you!
Looking forward to experimenting with that.
Maybe someone will design a replaceable extruder part for easy snap in change 🙂

Not quite that simple as the existing extruder motor is reused and moved to a different housing on top of the frame. Then there is the issue of where to connect an additional motor.

The MUX on top of the extruder body is simple to remove (one screw), but the PTFE tube in the heat sink is different and when replacing that I always unscrew the heat break half a turn. I don't think it would be feasible to swap over the whole extruder, so a good bit of work would be required.

A simple solution would be make it a 3 color upgrade.
- leave extruder motor in place and connect to new board
- mount 3 extras up top, plus one bowden tupe holder.
- have a de-tension lever on hotend-extruder, which somehow (handwaving 🙂 ) disengages that drive. or just block idler, it needs only 1.9mm gap
- mount the y-thingy on top and have a constrained path to the hotend extruder.

that would allow you to switch between 3 color printing and 1 color printing.

Of course, this is disregarding any kind of reality, and basically talking out of my bottom, as the young people say.

But still, I think something like this should be doable.

Yup. 😀

Nope. 😀

Seriously, for me it is better to have 4 filaments "on tap" than messing around. Yes, it would be possible to design a swappable extrude head/MUX system, but I don't see that as being worthwhile. Bowden systems are in use in many printers out there and working successfully; it is probably a matter of understanding the limitations and finding work-arounds (mainly in the slicer). There is also the benefit of having a constant filament path which helps improve quality.
