Questions about Spool Holder

I've been looking on Thingiverse and would like to make a new spool holder to facilitate filament changes. There are two basic kinds: the ones that are similar to the holder that comes with the Prusa Mk2S where the spool is held through the middle, and the ones that provide a bottom on support, similar to the following: https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:2362427 .

I'd like to make one similar to the second one linked above, where the spool is placed on the rolling supports and has nothing through the middle. However, my concern is this: if there is a kink or jam in the filament such that it no longer comes off the spool, or is otherwise held up on the spool, could the extruder pull the spool off the holder, such that it rolls off into the front and comes crashing down onto the extruder or print bed? Or am I just being overly cautious?

I'd love to hear from others who have printed/used this style of spool holder and their experiences.

Thanks very much in advance!

Don K.

PS - My printer is an Original Prusa i3 Mk2S, with less than 4 days total print time on it. Just got it in December and love it.

Re: Questions about Spool Holder

Scroll down and look at the single arm spool holder on the new MK3. From my understanding, this new single arm spool holder will fit on our MK2s printers. I am going to print one of these single arm spool holders and test it. I keep having problems with the two arm spool holders because one of the sides keeps coming loose!

Re: Questions about Spool Holder

I had a spool of filament fall off the two arm mk2 spool holder, and damage the Y motor bracket

the single arm mk3 spool holder does fit the mk2 frame... I have just tried it...

Yes, I've been running one for a couple of months now. Apart from a small amount of deformation at the end (due to the mass of the spool) it is working fine. I did print it with PLA though so that may be the cause.

It is a huge improvement over the two arm design.

Thanks everyone for the replies. I'll play it safe and print the spool holder for the Mk3.

Thanks again!

PLA is stiffer than other materials (except maybe CF PLA but that will break anyway). probably needs to be thicker since it was made for injection molding and not printing.

Re: Questions about Spool Holder

I have just looked at the mk3 spoolholder in the downloadable parts and the git hub version, and they are both much less chunky around the frame fitting, than the original

I just bought some Petg and printed the holder from the Pusa site and I think it turned out really well. I fits the frame perfectly and works better than the original.

Re: Questions about Spool Holder

I have two on my mk3. The original and a mirror image. So the handles face the outside of the frame.

This helps me with layer separated multicolour prints.

Re: Questions about Spool Holder

Ive been thinking of updating to this holder. Im currently using the original 2 arm version with this: https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:2290104 It works well but its still a bit fiddly. All I have here is PLA, is it worth it? Also what kind of infill percentage should I use?

Re: Questions about Spool Holder

Yes, anything is worth it compared to the original two arm design. The single arm I printed in PLA with standard 20% infill. There is a little flexure in the arm but nothing that should cause any issues.

Re: Questions about Spool Holder

I printed the MK3 spool holder in silver PLA and no problems with it, but I am thinking a redesign to include a sponge dust filter may be an necessary improvement given the number of people seeing frequent nozzle blockages.

Re: Questions about Spool Holder

Over the weekend i noticedĞ that the mk3 filament holder off the pprintable parts. Has a knob on the end of the filament rail that is a little bit larget than the original single arm mk3 filament holder. I can put my sainsmart filament on the old arm. But not on the new arm. If i was doing another one i would shaave a couple off mm off the under side of the arm where it would not harm the strength but would allow my TPU ROLL TO GO ON EASILY

Ditto for one roll of Hatchbox PLA (Amazon) using the latest single arm spool holder that's coming with the MK3. Won't go over the end stop. Another roll of Hatchbox PLA has a larger center hole and does fit. Go figure.
