Questions about bad prints (Slic3r, Cura) and overall issues with support

Hi there! 🙂

I'm testing Slic3r + Cura (pics in attachments) and I have a hard time printing something that makes me happy, especially if supports are involved.

Here's the two configurations, all with the latest 3.0.8 firmware:

Slic3r

  • version 1.2.9 from ubuntu/fedora's repo

  • settings from the config bundle Version 1.7.4 Most recent (September 8, 2016)

  • Cura
  • 2.3-BETA from Thomas Karl Pietrowski's PPA

  • settings preloaded with the latest Cura
  • With those slicer, I printed a «big» Oddish with Cura and a scale down version with Slic3r. The two prints are really ugly and show some clear and apparent problems.

To be sure, I also printed the bundled triceratops head.
In that case, the top part is nice, apart from A LOT of stringing. As for the back, the part on the right is almost smooth whereas the left clearly did some hanging between support (more triceratops here).

    So here's my questions:

  • Do you have any ideas why both Slic3r and Cura are failing really hard for my prints?

  • Can I avoid those stringing issues? Keeping in mind that the triceratops was pre-sliced for the MK2 (by the Prusa team, I presume?), so no slicer configuration on my part

  • Is it possible to print with support and avoid those really ugly hanging? I'm not expecting surfaces as smooth when supports are involved, but here it's just rubbish!
  • Thank you in advance for any help :).

EDIT: more pictures with this temporary link here, especially for the triceratops
