Prusa i3 mk2 electronics details

Its been a while since I got my Prusa i3 mk2. I want to make an extension to it, by making the Z axis lead screws and linear rods taller. I already figured out what rods I want, but I realized that I have to extend all of the X axis and Extruder cables. The problem is that I do not know what type of cable extensions to buy. Does anyone else know? I need: The X axis cable type, the X endstop, the pinda probe, the extruder motor, the extruder heater, the extruder thermisor, the print fan, the extruder fan, and I thing thats it. I would appreciate your support. 🙂

Hello Julius!

You may create your own cables for the different parts. I ordered Molex C-Grid SL housings 2.54 mm pitch and crimp sockets for a couple of euros and a crimping tool for 50 euro. That has worked like a charm ever since 2015 without problems . It was however demanding to crimp the sockets due to the precision needed to fix the wire before crimping (shaky hands didn't make it better). Maybe you need some soldering as well to remove the need to crimp the cables at both ends as well.

quit smoking

seriously: it's a good idea to get the required tools and parts to manufacture the cables "taylor made". so you can optimize cable management and routing as well. so if you use aluminium profiles for the frame for example, you can lead the stepper cables through the hole in the middle and attach the connectors afterwards.
this offers much better design options.

Any precise parts and tools recommendations for good taylor made cables?
I'm starting to think about a Haribo mod of my MK2S and indeed better cable management could be a nice thing!

Maybe I did not explain it correctly. I want to buy a male to female for the extension of my cables, since I am not good at robotics whatsoever, but, when you buy a male to female cable, you need to know the type of entrance it has to be. Like HDMI, USB, JST-PH, and many others I don't want to name. Anyway, does anyone know the cable type? I really don't want to have to bring my Rambo to the electronics shop. 😉

These are not industry standard cables. HDMI is a standard for all video, USB for all computers. These are just custom cables with connectors. There is no name for them. Just make sure the gauge is good for the power handling parts (heater elements), and the connectors are the same.

Any advices given are offered in good faith. It is your responsibility to ensure that by following my advice you do not suffer or cause injury, damage or loss. If you solve your problem, please post the solution…
