Printer Freezes in middle of print

I have a MK2 that i built a week or so ago. It was printing fine but now it suddenly freezes in the middle of a print and just sits there usually around 10-15 percent of the print. It didnt happen with pla just with abs it seems. i read some posts that said to make sure i eject my sd card before pulling it out of the computer, which i have been very careful to make sure it saves all the gcode. There is no error code on the lcd screen, it just freezes, when i look at the statistics the timer for the print is still going. I am using slic3r, tried several different simple prints but it still keeps freezing. Any ideas.

thanks

I am a super newbie and can't help with the exact solution but may I suggest you use the chat feature on the Prusa website? They answer in a snap.

Good luck

When using Slic3r apparently is saves the GCode in background. If you close it before the save has completed, the GCode file will be incomplete.

Also the SD card must be "safely removed" when using Windows. However, before removing the card you can open the file in a text editor, scroll to the end of file and ensure all the post-amble is present (check against a pre-sliced file).

I use Notepad++ for editing GCode files.

I don't think it is a g code problem, I am very careful about saving and ejecting. When I print the exact same thing in pla it works perfect. Think it's some kind of temperature shutdown problem. I print in abs at 260 and 100 degrees. It gets through the first couple of layers perfectly then just stops over the print. It stops at a different point of the print each time I try it.

Does it stop when the part fan turns on?

Re: Printer Freezes in middle of print

does it stop leaving the bed and the nozzle on target temperature?
do the temperatures look fine while printing and when it stops?
is the lcd still responsive? can you operate the printer from the lcd screen when it has stopped?

the part fan never comes on i have it set for off on abs.

both the nozzle and bed temperatures are in range when it stops.

The LCD is still active, i have tried pausing and restarting but nothing happens, it just stays locked frozen.

I just tried it again and did the exact same thing except this time it got to 24% done

Printer Freezes, bad thermister

after getting on prusa chat with Greyson, he suggested that i prove it wasnt a gcode problem first.

to prove that the problem wasnt the gcode, i used the same gcode file that was printing the pla version perfectly, then manually adjusted the extruder and bed temp to abs temps, 255 and 100.

I got a thermal runaway error 5 min into the print

we concluded that the problem may be the thermister on the extruder. I unplugged the thermister connector and routed the wire a little different, then reversed the thermister connection on the rambo (orientation is not supposed to matter), then tried abs prints again.
.

The problem seems to be fixed.

I have printed 4 successful abs prints since.

the connection to the thermister must have been loose or the crimp in the connector wire was incomplete.

I have ordered another thermister from matterhackers just in case this happens again.

I could have gone through the warranty process but that would have been a pain for a $10 part from Matterhackers here in the US.

I will update this post if it happens again, crossing fingers!!!

Everybody should replace their thermistor connector with a soldered connection asap. Reseating is only a temporary solution with a flimsy connector that is moved and rattled by design. Prusa have changed their assembly and replaced the thermistor connector with a soldered connection starting with the 11th of October.

From the support article:

Thermal Runaway because of the thermistor connector. New connector can become loose over time, try reseating it. If it doesn't help, the small thermistor wires got broken inside the connector where it is crimped, you best bet is to cut away the connector all together, splice the wires and solder them together. Our manufacturing process is being adjusted (11 Oct 2016) so new printers will come like this.

EDIT: Glad you got it fixed.

Thanks for posting this. The article also suggest that you should turn the extruder temperatures down from 215 to 200 after the first layer when when printing PLA the Prusa PLA.

I'm unclear where the poor connection is? Is it where the wires enters the thermistor cylinder, or are they referring to the far end of the cable where the servo-style 2-pin connector is located? If it is at that end, I can understand the suggestion to solder. When I built that connection I taped it with electrical tape as it seemed weak. If I start to have additional temperature problems, I'll solder that connection. For now, my sock is working fine.

Thanks,

John

You are welcome. They are talking about the far end of the cable, the 2-pin Molex connector.
