Print Deteriorates at Certain Height

Hey all,

I've had my printer for around a month now and have managed a few pretty decent prints, but the last week or so has seen numerous problems develop.

The latest is that after a while, usually at the same height, the print quality just falls apart and i'm not sure what causes it. Its not the model as it happens with any print. The settings are:

1.75mm PLA
Temp: first layer - 190 other - 180
Retraction: 2mm
Ret speed: 80mm/s
Infil: 25%

As you can see from this picture it just begins to break up, its kind of hard to explain. I've cleaned the nossle which improved the quality from the prior print where i was having other issues, but now i'm simply not sure what the problem is.

Does anyone have any ideas?

Hello Jonathan!

Could you print an object directly afterwars this print? So we know for sure that nothing has happened with the nozzle.

Could you try printing an object with the same height as this one, but a much smaller footprint and on several different locations on the platform? Just a small cylinder would do good. Then we might spot faulty wires or the like.

I already have, i've printed several small objects in different places and it seems to be the exact same with each of them.
Previously i was printing two cylinders vertically next to each other to sort my retraction speeds and distances out to solve some webbing issues.

Every print appears to have the same problem when they get to this height.

Would you like me to try another and post the results to show you anwyay?

Good, then I think it is good enough with prints.

However I wonder if the printed object really sat down to the print bed hard?
The picures you have right now do seem to have shadows casting from the first layers (or the small skirt) onto the heat bed and that seems to reveal maybe a dirty print bed.

How does the first layer look like from the bottom - a picture would be nice?

It would be good to understand if it is a hardware issue or a slicer issue.

Have you printed some pre-sliced files from the SD card? Do they also fail at this height?

When the print fails, is the cooling fan (on the side) running?

Your temperature seems low to me - try upping it. 210/215 is the Slic3r default for PLA.

The prints are sticking down to the bed without a problem, i had to print a skirt thing to help with narrower prints but thats kind of to be expected.

Ive printed a few different things from thingiverse and my own files to see what happens. il try printing the Prusa frog and see what happens and keep an eye on the fan.

Ive printed a few different prints at a variety of temperatures and it seems to be unrelated.

I'l post the results shortly, cheers for the suggestions

Okay ive reprinted the Prusa Frog straight from the SD card and have have just a good a quality print as the original frog i did a few weeks ago. The fan had no issues and ran throughout.

Does this mean im having a problem with my slic3r program?

If the pre-sliced files don't have issues, and yours do, you have a slicer issue.

What slicer and settings are you using?

I was using the Prusa 3D Slic3r, but ive just started a print on the PrusaControl beta software so il see if that one does it better.

I was using the default PLA settings but also have altered them a few times while experimenting.

Once common issue people have is they use the default Slic3r settings, not the ones you get if you "Load Config..." and load the .ini file provided by Prusa. Did you do that?
