Portability and durability question
I'm considering a Prusa i3 MK2 with the intent of sharing it with friends. This means it will be transported a lot.
Is this going to be a problem? I'm thinking of the following:
Has anyone else transported an assembled device? Can you share your thoughts?
Re: Portability and durability question
The printer is not very heavy or big, so in that sense it is very portable.
However, I suspect you would need to recalibrate it often if you move it a lot, and also run the risk of damaging some parts. You may want to make sure you have a lot of spare parts and are ready to mess with the printer a lot.
OTOH, lots of people order the pre-assembled version which is shipped around the world in a cardboard box, so if you are careful enough aside from redoing the calibration you should be fine.

With a lot of fixing stuff mounted on it. 😉
Re: Portability and durability question
Perhaps I would need to create a good box to put it in, if nothing else, to keep from getting banged around by any other objects.

What parts are most likely to be damaged or most vulnerable?
Re: Portability and durability question
Hard to tell, but we can assume that the ABS printed parts are not indestructible (also, you could get unlucky and have a less strong than usual part I guess).
The wires could get damaged (some are thin and some people report broken wires even from normal printer usage), this could even lead to a short that could potentially damage the electronics (though hopefully the fuses will protect you from that).
If something gets dislodged I can imagine the rods could get scratched or something like that, but that doesn't seem very likely?
Anybody that actually moves the printer around a lot and has some experience with this?
