Re: PETG Filament advice

hi community,
got PRIMASELECT PETG filament here, but can't manage to get proper first layers with the PETG setting that comes with slic3r 1.31.6-prusad3d 🙁

It always looks like this:

btw: didn't use any glue until now.

any hints ?

looks like its the "toes" and "fingers" of the creature that doesn't stick. In this case I would of course be sure that the plate is clean, cleaning with IPA 95%++, and I would start the print really slow, like 20% of the default speed, print with a brim maybe 10mm outside of the model, so you have time to turn the speed down and adjust your Z Live Adjust. As soon as the initial purge is done and the print starts bring down the speed and look really close on the filament, adjust your Live Z Adjust so you see that its really is squeezed onto the bed.

That should get the model to stick.

Re: PETG Filament advice

thanks for the advice, i'm going to check this out after the current print (with Extrudr BDP in approx. 6 hours).
something to consider: the filament doesn't only stick on the surface, it shows some "crumbles" (at the feets of the gecko).

by the way: i cleaned the surface very thoroughly, i'll always do that 😉 .

Crumbles, blobs and zits is pretty common with PETG, and often its about temperature and retraction, so maybe printing a test model first with that filament, and try some different temps while it prints, to see if you can dial it in?

Re: PETG Filament advice

For the first layer with pet g slow it down to 40% of normal speed. No fan for the first 3 layers. Around 90 degree bed and experiment with nozzle temp starting at 235.

The quality of filament with pet g varies massively. I tried to dial in the settings for a spool for weeks and couldn't get a quality print. Then I tried a spool of real filament pet g. Different world. It prints anything brilliantly apart from very thin pointed sections.... Like lower section of adalindas wings.

The first layer on the benchy print is tough with pet g. I went down to 30% using same Z height as with pla.

Re: PETG Filament advice

I have been using my Prusa for 6 months with just PLA. I recently got a roil of Matthackers Pro PETG, and can't get it to print.
I have used the presets in Prusa Slic3r, as well as the new Prusa Control....all Z adjustments have been made, and i have tried all combinations of surface prep...plain, plain with glue stick, blue tape with and without glue stick...but i get no adhesion at all...just a wad of plastic on the nozzle
i have tried numerous set up changes listed here on the forum (speed/fan/temperature) as well as adjusting the live z height while printing...but still nothing.
i can swap out to PLA and get great prints...is it possible that the nozzle just isn't getting close enough to lay down the filament, even after i try to adjust it?
...any and all idea/help would be welcomed

thanks

Did you clean the bed with Windex? Also, may need higher temps. I think I usually use around 235 but a few colors go up to like 255.

Re: PETG Filament advice

Glue works fine to me, doesnt matter the size of the print.

About the filament building up in the nozzle: I kind of gave up, can't manage to print a perfect first layer with Prusa Petg, I always get blobs and strings. Has any one else used the reduce extrusion multiplier trick?

i had issues with prusa petg also .
before you start a print , heat up the nozzle (petg profile) and move z axis up .
clean the goo from the nozzle , as it oozes when heating , then start the print .

i also increased the purge line to 150 (x) and reduced extrusion to 10 (was 12.5)

Re: PETG Filament advice

Im only printing with eSUN filament, and I really like their PETG filaments as well.

Hello,
I'm having problems with PETG on my MK3. Mainly the extruder is curling/blobbing. Could you share your settings?
Temperature, speed, fan, retraction or whatever you've tuned. I'm using eSun PETG as well.

Thanks!

Simon

Re: PETG Filament advice

I used the Priline PETG and it is like $20 dollars on amazon, I used cura setting on my Mk2 and found that 50mm/s travel, 235 hotend, 60 C bed, flow 95% and retraction at 6mm and 50mm/s works very nicely.

Re: PETG Filament advice

Can anyone tell me the settings for esun PETG that have great results with ?

Re: PETG Filament advice

I have printed very successfully with different PETG materials, PRUSA PET, Extrudr and HobbyKing PETG, but I also ran into issues and learned the following:

Blobs, zids and stringing:
I started having a lot of issues which went away after drying the filament, and I now store all my filament with ample of silica gel

FIRST LAYER:
PETG can be a real pain to get to work, and I had occasions when I was getting really frustrated.
Cleaning the PEI with dishwashing soap was very useful, SLOWING DOWN the first layer is almost mandatory IMHO (I use 60-80%) and playing with Live-Z until it sticks properly. Don't give up! Live Z is very sensitive and can be hard to dial in.

Bondtech tension:
I had issues with slipping filament and also with too tight gears. But relatively easy to set, just enough to securely grip the filament.

With those 3 measures I got all brands to print very well with the PRUSA PET settings, I only slowed down the print, since that seemed to increase part strength and quality.

Re: PETG Filament advice

I have had good results with White PETG from Hatchbox.

Re: PETG Filament advice

I know this thread is over 6 months old but wanted to share that I've just converted from PLA (Hatchbox, SunLu & others) to AmazonBasics PETG with surprisingly quick success. My first print using Slic3r PET default settings failed (separated from the bed, using Kores Glue Stick), so after reading recommendations on this thread, I lowered the first layer speed, added a 10mm brim on one layer raft and use Kores Glue Stick on the bed. The most important issue for me to remember is not to grab the part off right after the print ends.
