Re: multimatrial delayed again

At a guess I would say that he's postponed the delivery pending satisfactory beta testing,
it's better to delay delivery than deliver a product that has not completed beta testing satisfactorily.
if we only have one printer and we upgrade to the colour version, we may be stuck with an inoperative printer whilst issues are ironed out, or alternatively having to return the printer to the previous format.

It's difficult to wait, but I expect the delay will be worthwhile.

Who's also waiting! impatiently... 🙂

Absolutely agree!

Thats what a beta test is for! If there are issues, I am very happy to wait for my preorder if it means I have less trouble with it.

And if they manage to make it compatible with flexible materials I'll make a little happy dance. 😀

I really don't think flex filaments will be a starter with this. The movement speeds required are too high to reliably feed them through the Bowden system

Yes, I'm aware its a slim hope. I was kind of hoping for a dual stepper solution.
At least thats what I will try if I find the time.

The plan would be to keep the extruder as it is on the current hotend, and wire the stepper on the extruder and the stepper on the bowden in paralell, as it is done (i think) with the 2 Y-axis steppers.
That would ( at least in my vivid imagination) allow the best of both worlds.

Most probably reality will put an end to this dream, but just maybe .... 🙂

Bubble bursting time (sorry...)

OK, but you have to re-use the existing stepper; you only receive 1 or 3 depending on which version you ordered.

You would not be able to share the power output to the extruder steppers; a Bowden setup needs far more power than direct drive.

And the hot end assembly needs to be rebuilt with modified parts.

Aww. Could have let me hope a bit longer 🙂

But really, its kind of annoying to lose the ability to print flexibles. Not that I use it THAT much, but especially with multi-upgrade it would be great to be able to combine different materials with different properties.

Printing seals right into cases, for example, or making hinged parts. Creating "meta-materials" that are hard AND shock absorbent... etc.

Maybe next year, or next generation those things will be possible.

The Bowden system is for sure a problem overall with different materials like Ninjaflex and other stretchy materials like Nylon. The change from direct drive to a Bowden multimaterial expeience is fraught and maybe, impossible. Similar material and colour change is doable, albeit very slowly, but not different material with a Bowden extruder. I have tried to print Ninjaflex on my Bowden driven Kossel Mini. It worked better than I expected. Maybe because of the Kossel Mini's extruders design. However not what I needed for perfect tyres on a robotic rover.

Re: multimatrial delayed again

Ugh, just got off a chat with customer service. I ordered before they mentioned any delays, and now they're saying that they won't START shipping at all until February, even though the website says January. They're just copy/pasting a response. I mean, fine, if there's a problem found in the beta test, at least tell us. Don't keep changing the shipping start date every last day of the month to a month later. It's three months late, it's time for an explanation.

The impossible, they can manage. Magic takes------ a little longer... ! Lol.

I'm waiting for both a Mk2 and a colour upgrade. ..

Re: multimatrial delayed again and again...

I ordered in November a printer and a upgrade kit. The printer i have got in December, after I asked about the deliver time, because the shipment was overdue. I am happy with the printer. This was the good news. But I am still waiting for the upgrade kit. I got no infos from Prusa about the delay. The only infos i get are replys if i send a mail and ask. Now they will start shipping in March, after they wanted to start in December , they wanted to start in January, they wanted to start in February. I choose Prusa because of the unique colour kit. And now this. I am very sad about this situation.

Re: multimatrial delayed again

In the same boat as you, minus having a printer.

I combined the order, so they've been holding off on shipping anything until the multi gets released. In support's defense, each time in chat (maybe once a month to check status), they offer to split shipment and send the printer immediately, since it's been on order since the first week of Oct. I politely decline, since the multi is the only reason I grabbed this printer.

There's nothing official from the company yet, and according to chat, they are expected to make an official announcement concerning the delays either this week or next.

But, if the rumors are true, they've upgraded to bondtech gears for the extruders on the multi, and if that's the case, it will be well worth the wait, I guarantee it.

I used to have jams a lot in my other printers, mostly because I went with cheap hot end clones from ebay. On fighting that problem, I upgraded to a bondtech extruder and have never gotten a jam since.

I'm really hoping the rumors are true, but we'll have to wait for the official announcement I supose. Paid for mine the first week of Oct and nothing to show for it yet, but if it seriously has the bondtech gears, I'm more than happy to wait. Would have upgraded to them anyway.

It is not a rumor. The MM upgrade now uses the Bondtech drive gears http://shop.bondtech.se/ec/drivegears/drivegear-kit-175-direct.html . They have advantages (excellent drive, less filament damage) and disadvantages (140 steps/mm, price - US$50 retail, per motor).

However, I would totally disagree that the multi-filament upgrade would be the primary reason to purchase this printer. How can it be when even now, nobody really knows how good it may or may not be? The reason to purchase the Mk2 original is simply the price/performance level without any add-ons/upgrades.

And I don't understand why you would not want the printer first and the upgrade later. You need to get used to and enjoy the printer and then when you are completely happy with it, install the upgrade (which only takes an hour or two).

Peter

P.S. The MM upgrade hardware may change before shipping.

Re: multimatrial delayed again

Understood completely. I'm rocking quite a few other printers though. The only thing that impressed me to the point of pulling the trigger on this, was the multi upgrade.

Other printers, like the flux for example, have the same quality prints, with laser etching, etc. For the same price point as this machine.

Re: multimatrial delayed again

multimaterial will come with Prusa Research I am sure. However the change to a Bowden extruder system is a huge change.

Re: multimatrial delayed again

According to the support chat there will be an official announcement in the next few days.

What annoys me is the lack of information by Prusa, every time i think i will get the upgrade and ask chat where my order is i get a delay info.

The last info in the blog was quite late and here in the forum is nothing about the delays (or i didn't find it).

I expected a (automated) mail to the customers who bought the upgrade

EDIT:- just found the blog post from yesterday:

http://www.prusaprinters.org/update-multimaterial-upgrade/

So we wil have to wait longer... 😥 But better wait and get a wotking product than getting something that is not working all the time
