Re: MK3 coming!
Difficult to talk Mk3 at the moment though is it not? We have had the fanfare of release and now a resounding silence. Even the discount vouchers promised in a few days are still vapourware.
I have a Mk2S which I received in August. I ordered a Mk3 within 24 hours of release. All I have of my Mk3 is an order acknowledgement and a £720 hole in my CC. No voucher, no estimated ship date.
Don't get me wrong, I appreciate and admire Josef Prusa and all he does and I am certain everyone at Prusa is working flat out to bring us the new goodies.
Grumpy and frustrated, that's me. 🙂
Re: MK3 coming!
Can we talk MK3 again please?
I have MK3 questions
Does utilizing Octoprint omit any of the user functionality that the MK3 offers?
Is there a special build of Octoprint planned for Prusa?
Any good things to understand about utilizing Octoprint with Prusa?
I would like to understand if octoprint is something I even want or is more worthwhile for me than just being really “cool” based on how users utilize it, and also know what hardware might be a good fit for my needs.
Is there a good forum for Octoprint hardware selection, understanding user issues and problems to avoid, functionality and utility for people that utilize it?
I read the Raspberry Pi Zero W has issues with CPU utilization using wifi ?
Has the Wifi issue been resolved on the Zero W? It seems from what little information available, the mk3 is intended to utilize the Zero W specifically?
Does it matter which camera I utilize?
I see some pretty inexpensive options, are there any suggestions what to avoid, tips and suggestions of cameras to get?
Are Pi Zero W units hard to get in hand? I have seen reports of limited availability, and strange pricing for older units? Do I need to order one and be patient for stock and availability?
Any good ways to utilize octoprint via iOS that people like?

- power cut for sure. when using octoprint, the rpi control the printer and when the power is down, rpi shuts down, forgetting his job.
Is there a special build of Octoprint planned for Prusa?
- question for Josef 🙂
I would like to understand if octoprint is something I even want or is more worthwhile for me than just being really “cool” based on how users utilize it, and also know what hardware might be a good fit for my needs.
- probably yes. best + for me is that you just drag/drop (or direct upload with slic3r) your file to the printer, start it and monitor the progress without leaving the computer (i don't have the printer in the same room). other great thing is that you start the print in the morning and monitor the progress when you're outside. stop/pause, if you see that something went wrong. you also have a lot of addons to help you with work ...
Does it matter which camera I utilize?
I see some pretty inexpensive options, are there any suggestions what to avoid, tips and suggestions of cameras to get?
- just to monitor the print, vga should do it. if you want to record the time lapses, you probably need hd. good to check this list before buying: https://elinux.org/RPi_USB_Webcams
Any good ways to utilize octoprint via iOS that people like?
- i use Octo remote ( https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/octo-remote-for-octoprint/id1056552565?mt=8 ). It has very few functions, but it does what i need it for

I don't thing that there will be a need of a special Octoprint version, everything is already there.

Here what i did to run Octoprint on NON-RPi hardware: https://shop.prusa3d.com/forum/software-f13/getting-slic3r-prusa-edition-on-octoprint-t4040.html#p31691
But there are now better and easier ways to get Octoprint installed:
http://dietpi.com/#download this has even Octoprint http://dietpi.com/phpbb/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=5&p=7958#p7958
If you need more power you can go for a Odroid-C2 via ethernet (wifi dongle if needed).

I use a $9 C.H.I.P. with Octoprint and if you need more power you can choose any other board.
The nice thing is, that Ultimachine changed the pinout of P1/P2/P3 (P1/P2 going to LCD, and P3 used for MMU) and made TX1/RX1 available via the new (Octoprint) header. Saying that you can use any solution you like which can communicate via serial to the Einsy.
You can also go for something like this: https://github.com/luc-github/ESP3D-WEBUI hardware costs around 4-10$. And if you want going crazy for few more bugs, you can add a temp/humidity sensor and LED controller to switch lights on and off.
Does it matter which camera I utilize?

Check Octoprint wiki for that.
Are Pi Zero W units hard to get in hand? I have seen reports of limited availability, and strange pricing for older units? Do I need to order one and be patient for stock and availability?
I have the problem getting the Pi Zero W or RPi3 for a good price and compared to other boards it is not the best in my opinion (except the community is the biggest).

Thanks tomaz, may I ask a few followups.
Why would power cut be a limitation, if you could describe this please?
Simply because the RP0W probably takes its power from the EINSY RAMBo motherboard which probably doesn't allow enough overhead power to run the save functionality in the “Power Panic” mode?
>Is there a special build of Octoprint planned for Prusa?
That question was completely speculation from reading others thought on how functionality “could be” extended to octoprint, and specifically to patch up the holes using octoprint creates.
The idea for me currently would be to allow remote “babysitting” , I wouldn't feel anxious leaving a print if I could monitor it remotely, particularly outside my network for a quick trip to the store, or even when a rare Long print necessitates I carry on with life elsewhere...
At least this way I could have a modicum of control over the situation, and even be able to have someone at home on site be able to repair or stop the process should anything go wrong and I am hours out.
Does octoprint have the ability to control camera Pan and Tilt ?
Is that why so many choose a webcam over a board cam?
I have found an exceptionally inexpensive 5MP board cam on ebay...
Does anyone have a word of advice about this unit paired with a Pi Zero W ? It has the smaller FFC for the RP0W, so it should be a direct plug and play?
But I dont see any documentation or support called out for this camera anywhere?
Is that a problem at all ? It seems it is for the RP0W ? Should work with no issues?
At least it would inexpensively allow me to test out the hardware and see if it is right for me.
>- probably yes. best + for me is that you just drag/drop (or direct upload with slic3r) your file to the printer, start it and monitor the progress without leaving the computer
That sounds VERY attractive over fiddling with SD cards back and forth!
Thank You! 🙂

- well "power panic " is firmware (and hardware?) on the printer. like i said before, printing with octopi is like printing with computer via usb. computer control the printer and he doesn't know what to do after power restore (because octopi didn't store that informations which mk3 could). you would need "power panic" included in octopi to work. there are also other problems regarding this connection. maybe this is something that other guys has solved, but i didn't ... when printer does some procedure (loading filament for example) and this procedure takes too long, then octopi report an error for some "time out .... error" . had to learn this on a hard way. you make "colour change", printer goes to M600 command and if you change the filament quickly it is everything ok, but if you take too much time ... well ... then after colour change, octopi report a problem and the printer doesn't move any more. It gets the same error when loading filament. "is colour clear?". no. repeat this two times, and you get the same error. Maybe this is a thing from the past, because i didn't use it that way after learning this. you also have addon in octopi for colour change, but have never used it. So there can be then a problem also with, "filament run out" function if you're not by the printer when it happens. don't know how is with skipped layers, but this should probably work fine.

- well. i use it many times for longer prints this way. i put it print in the morning (i don't have permission to print at night 🙄 ) and monitor it through the day from work. It is nice to have an option to cancel the print if object comes of the build plate, etc ... with the new magnetic bed i see also this option: "babe, can you please change the sheet on the printer? love you, you're the best, etc .... ..." any you have clear surface, ready to start another print 😉
Does octoprint have the ability to control camera Pan and Tilt ?

- don't know. you have many addons for it, maybe this was already done. but you can do it for sure, because you can control all the pins on rpi, so with some work you can control a hell lot of a things ...
- i choose web cam over pi cam, because of the ribbon, which i don't like.
>- probably yes. best + for me is that you just drag/drop (or direct upload with slic3r) your file to the printer, start it and monitor the progress without leaving the computer

- and it is. but like i said before. sd is still better to use when you have a colour change (colour is changed quickly, but if you inserting some objects, it usually takes more time). i would also use sd with mk3 if i would be afraid that power could go off during a longer print (haven't lost a power in 5 years at location where i live now, so this option is not really plus for me). but for mk3, lets wait till release. a lot of guys also use flashAir and if i understand it correctly, it should work fine with all the options of the mk3. but then, printer is in charge, not octopi.
Thank You! 🙂
- you're welcome 🙂
Re: MK3 coming!
There is an early review online:
https://makezine.com/product-review/prusa-i3-mk3/
They say the print quality is behind MK2S right now - I wonder what that is about and if Prusa will be able to correct this issue.
From the ads I was expecting a better quality - for example from the better fan shroud design the "overhang performance" is said to be better... And the frame should be stiffer...
Interesting times!

From the review...a couple of points behind from a prototype...
"However, after the judging was complete, the MK3 fell behind its sibling by a couple points in our scoring. Although, we have to remember that these were the only two prototypes the Prusa team had."
Re: MK3 coming!
Here is a little more from Make to put things into perspective:
https://makezine.com/2017/09/23/prusa-mk3/
So make had the prototype for a while. Early prototypes they are:-)

Still trying to clarify this point, just out of interest...
At ~7:05 Josef seems to mention there is a pin specifically for "Power Panic" on the accessory port.
So from my limited understanding there is the option to bake in support for Power Panic in Octoprint with a dedicated header to sense and activate the feature set ?

As far as I understand it: Power Panic is a signal on a dedicated pin which is controlled by the power supply and passed through to the accessory header and thus can be connected to the raspberry pi.
I do not know but I think that Octoprint might have no implementation yet on what to do when the signal comes in.
But on the hardware side: If you power the raspberry pi via your MK3 board, and the power goes out, the pi goes out. This might destroy the filesystem on the SD card of your raspberry pi. So I think someone has to create a minimal UPS solution for the pi which gives the pi enough power to do its thing in octoptrint (what ever that might be) and then shut down the system in an orderly manner.

Sorry I am prone to bought's of depression. Its all good as Joseph Prusa's design and work is open source 🙂

Nothing here yet
Re: MK3 coming!
Could be wrong, but I thought he was joking there. Because he took a pause after saying that, and immediately after he clarified why they aren't offering an MK3 upgrade.
I think he is hesitating because he didn't know what he could say.
We are still waiting on the MK2.5 upgrade kit pre-orders although they should have been available during the week of the announcement. I've tried to ask Josef about it on Twitter, no answer. I really think that they are trying to figure something out due to the community reaction.
Well, I stand corrected.
Re: MK3 coming!
did any one got the $99 voucher?
I got my $100 code in the email this morning and instantly went and ordered a MK2S -> MK3 upgrade kit.
Re: MK3 coming!
Hi,
the Original Prusa i3 MK2/S to MK2.5 upgrade kit https://shop.prusa3d.com/en/printer-upgrades/179-original-prusa-i3-mk2s-to-mk25-upgrade-kit.html is available to preorder for 199€ as the Original Prusa i3 MK2/S to MK3 upgrade kit https://shop.prusa3d.com/en/printer-upgrades/182-original-prusa-i3-mk2s-to-mk3-upgrade-kit.html for 499€ start shipping from January 2018.
There were rumors if the MK3 Fans will be 24v or 12v or even 5v, it looks like the they are 24v versions.
Original Prusa i3 MK2/S to MK3 upgrade kit for 499€ is nearly a new printer as Josef Prusa said.
Just missing:
- Motors
- smooth rods
- bearings
- screws/nuts
- and you have to print your parts yourself
Thanks to Josef Prus and his team to make this option available!
Re: MK3 coming!
Just the 2.5 upgrade for me.. I think the MK2s is a perfect printer except for the bed. The PEI is a little fragile. The magnetic powered coated PEI sheets with make this printer even better. As some have said.. I'll wait for the MK4 before i buy another printer.. Love my MK2s

so did I but I ordered the MK3 as I sold MK2S, even made some $$ on the sale 🙂
First I was mad as the MK3 was announced but now I'm happy to get the MK3 even cheaper 🙂

Even cheaper ? how? Price of the mk3 kit hasn't changed
