MK2 ABS prints not sticking to BED [Solved]
Hi everyone,
I just received my upgrade to my printer and i completed the assembly, now im experimenting with printing in ABS.
I love the new bed, the auto leveling is extremly usfull, but i have had problems making the ABS stick to the bed, Im happy if anyone can help me with this. The bed should print fine with ABS without the need for ABS juice or glue sticks. But i have even tried to lay down some ABS Juice and it still curls up in some corners.
I did the Live Z adjustments, Im even trying to sqeeeze the first layer so that i have 200% width and 300% height, and still nothing is working.
I do not intend to use rafts, so i appreciate solutions that does not contain thoes.
Im currently trying to print it in both Slic3er and Simplify3D, in simlify3d i have managed to get very nice prints, but sadly they does not adhere to the bed.
Thank you all for your help

How do you clean the bed?

How do you get nice prints if they don't stick? Am I missing something?

I used window cleaner at first, then used went to use aceton instead. in both cases the stickiness is the same.

Well your right, i cant get very nice prints when they dont stick, what i meant is that the settings im printing with is right where it does stick it looks nice, but there is always places that the print dosnt stick.
usually what happens is it gets lifted in the corners and sides, so the bottom gets round instead of flat. I can see what the print will look like if it sticks proppably, but it dosnt 🙁

I understand that first layer sticks well but when print goes higher, perimeters lift up? Am I right?
What is your bed temperature, HE temperature and room temperature? Is the room ventilated? What are dimensions of printed objects? Do smaller objects get printed ok?
I clean the bed with alcohol (no window cleaner, never) and use 110°C on bed and 240°C on HE for ABS. Printed this thing (220mm long) with no problems, no lifts. It actually sticked to bed so well I couldn't pick it up.

Well Temps are:
room tempreture: 24-27 (We have air conditioning so it differs, and these are my guesses)
Nozzle: 255
BED: 100
and yes your right, i use the fan to cool the prints for the higher layers, the first 3 layers fan are disabled tho. The fan prevents the material from wrapping.
room is not really ventilated tho. and i sually print objects that are small, like 5x2 cm.
Thanks for your help

I will try to print with higher bed temps, and lower nozzle. I have no alcohol at the moment, but i thing aceton will be ok to use as an alternative right? actually i watched the video where Josef prusa told that window cleaners can be used and i had it so i used it.
I have even tried to use ABS juice to increase adhesion.

Re: MK2 ABS prints not sticking to BED

Clean the bed with IPA; anything else may prevent the adhesion.
Turn off the print fan for the whole print
Turn off air conditioning; that will cause drafts in the room - you need to print ABS in still warm air.
Increase the bed temp.

This is the biggest mistake IMO. Never use fan while printing from ABS. I never do. ABS dimensions are very dependent on its temperature. Cooling upper layers causes their shrinking, that's why layers warp up as upper layers cool down faster than lower layers.
Edit: Hi Peter, again 30 sec faster than me. 😆

will try to do the recommendations, many thanks.

Hmm i always cool them with the fan, i put the fan on low settings tho, it makes the finish looks great, will try without the fan and let you know about the outcome.

what is IPA?
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Isopropyl_alcohol
Alcohol (ethanol) works too. I use denatured one https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Denatured_alcohol as it is cheaper than pure ethanol.
Re: MK2 ABS prints not sticking to BED
Just some update.
I think it was the fan, my print is not finished yet, still printing, but it looks quite good, and the print is still sticking perfectly.
UPDATE: Print finished and sticking problem solved. looks great too. many thanks.
thank you very much for all your help.

Apologies. You have to get up very early to beat on old pensioner... 😉

Re: MK2 ABS prints not sticking to BED [Solved]
Thanks 😀
I've just upgrade my Mk1 to Mk2 and initial results with PLA were very good.
I then moved to ABS, and had some misery when trying to print large flat models.
Thanks (mostly) to this thread, I am now sorted again. 🙂
I use Cura on Linux. Things I changed (in case it's useful to others)...
Clean the bed with 99% IPA.
Change the machine size in Cura because the Mk2 has a larger bed (210x200)
Set the following in the Cura profile for ABS:
layer height = 0.3mm
print speed = 90mm/s
print temp = 255C (up from 245)
bed temp = 110C (up from 90)
retraction speed = 40mm/s
retraction distance = 4.5mm
travel speed = 120mm/s
bottom layer speed = 20mm/s
enabled cooling fan = NO <==== if this was yes I had thermal shutdown on layer 2 or 3.
I also closed the window and surrounded the printer with cardboard boxes to stop draughts.
Now my ABS printing is happy again.
Re: MK2 ABS prints not sticking to BED [Solved]
Are people using the ABS who are having problems us the ABS which came with the printer or are of Prusa make? or another make of ABS?
Re: MK2 ABS prints not sticking to BED [Solved]
I'm using Hatchbox ABS - now working fine with the adjustments above.

Update: I've updated my parameters a little, and am still getting good results with ABS using these faster settings:
Change the machine size in Cura because the Mk2 has a larger bed (250x210)
Set the following in the Cura profile for ABS:
layer height = 0.3mm
print speed = 120mm/s <==== faster
print temp = 245C
bed temp = 105C
retraction speed = 40mm/s
retraction distance = 4.5mm
travel speed = 150mm/s <==== faster
bottom layer speed = 60mm/s <===== faster
enabled cooling fan = NO
Re: MK2 ABS prints not sticking to BED [Solved]
@david.m3 your first settings work great using hatchbox ABS, now testing your faster settings, thanks alot!
A con of the prusa mk2 is that it automaticly decreases print time.
If i set 120mm/s instead of its standard 60mm/s it will print at 131% speed instead of what should be 200% speed.
But its a easy fix in the tune settings.
Do you have the same problem?
