gcode from original SD, slow to print

So I printed the lovely zig zag vase provided on the SD card, at last.
The filename suggests it takes ~5 Horus to print, and the description of it here states the same: http://www.prusa3d.com/printable-3d-models/

When it finished, the display on the printer said 7 hours 12 minutes.

This is curious to me. Why does my Mk2S print slower (by 40%!!!) than the ones owned by Prusa Research?

Anyone else remember how long this part took to print? ❓

Re: gcode from original SD, slow to print

your printer is not slower than the other ones at prusa or the ones at our (mk2/mk2s users) site !

the printing times, suggested by the file-name at the sd card are optimistically estimated ones by the used slic3r and are very inaccurate.
you'll find the same issue with self sliced files as well.

furthermore the times given at the prusa sample site are ment "roughly". so what does this mean ? +/- 30% ???

Estimated by software is one thing, but I just assumed that the files included to demonstrate the printer may have reasonable timings. The reasonably accurate gcode.ws offers 6h43m for the vase, which is much closer to my actual print time so this gcode really is a sever hour print, not a five hour one.

Re: gcode from original SD, slow to print

maybe the prints once were printed in that time, with a firmware release several versions ago.
maybe meanwhile the speed and acceleration settings inside the firmware have been limited for quality or safety purposes ?

try out a firmware like 3.0.7.
is it faster then ?

by the way: from the firmware point of view, there is no difference between mk2 and mk2s, so you can safely check out previous firmwares.

I think we can both be reasonably sure I'm not going to do that! 🙂

Re: gcode from original SD, slow to print

you can find the sources here (look for the different tag's).
to compile it, setting up the proper arduino version (correct version, libraries and drivers required) was made easy by allen.d with his script.

I once had a link to hex files of the previous versions... but I can't find it anymore.

That script is interesting, thanks. I'll actually have a good look at that. I've used the Arduino IDE for a few things but I do find it rather troublesome to set up for specific tasks, looks like that script may help with that a lot.

Re: gcode from original SD, slow to print

yeah, in fact it installs a second instance of arduino, with its own environmental settings and variables. so it won't interfere with other (most likely newer) versions of arduino.

I used to run arduino here for my arduino nano and ATtiny projects and always failed in setting up a proper environment to get the prusa branch compiled without errors (managed to compile marlin, but not the prusa firmware).
then allen.d posted his script and the previous pita turned into a peace of cake 😛
