First layer issues - see photo
Hello everyone,
First off, let me say that I love the MK2. All in all after going through the first PLA roll, it's wonderful.
I do however have a small issue when printing the first layer and as you can see in the picture it isn't as I've seen other prints.
Even if I immediately slow the printer down to 40 - 50% on the first layers, I still get this problem.
FYI, I don't think there are any calibration issues as all of the prints have been ok and also dimensional accuracy is good too.
Is it also possible to post a pic of your first layer that you would consider good, so that I can get an idea of how it should look like? Am I expecting too much when I say I'd like a smooth surface, like in the left corners there?
Thank you for your help,
Daniel

There's two ways that I deal with this when I print. You can change the Z axis live adjust setting and make it from like say -.300 to maybe -.350 (intervals of 0.050 are a good way to start). Whatever your setting is drop it some as this will cause the extruder to get closer to the PEI sheet and cause better bonding. Or in the lcd menu when you start to print increase the flow rate from 100% to 101% and then after the first layer move it back to 100%. I prefer adjusting the z-axis live adjust method the best. My z-axis live adjust is -.625 and seems to work well. Remember this number is unique for most people so just don't input my number as you can cause PEI sheet damage.
As the extruder moves closer to the PEI sheet and gives better appearance it can cause elephant feet which is why I put a .032 bevel usually on things I print on the PEI sheet that need to be flat and look good.

Hello,
First of all thanks for the help. I only got the chance to play with it last night a bit. I modified the first layer extrusion width in slic3r and things turned out much better. I will experiment with this further and I will also try your methods and see which one works best.
Thanks again,
Daniel

I see a similar or the same behaviour when using gluestick. The bottom side always has some "scars".
Even when I heat the bed for 5-10 minutes to dry the gluestick and the bed surface seems smooth it affects the first layer. From the top the first layer shows slight crinkles. I attached a photgraph of the bottom view which looks imilar to your picture. The printed lines form quite weird structures. You can see it see best at the location of the reflection. However, I cannot feel any ripples. The surface is still smooth.
This effect disappears, when I clean the printbed completely with alcohol and water

I have periodically gotten ripples and rough areas on my prints. Seems to come and go. Today I have been printing and object and it sounds like the nozzle is dragging as it prints. I changed colors and after a few layers the roughness stopped. Suspect it may be moisture in the filament. I keep it in zip loc bags with silica Gel packs. What can I do to fix problem? Heat gel packs in oven? Heat filament inoven? Suggestions.

That looks like your Live Z is too low, and the nozzle is dragging on the first layer.

yep zebra effect is often a sign of low live z.
Its likely a side effect of overcompensation for poor adhesion. A swipe with some acetone will give the pei a new lease of life then you can raise the z without feat of warp.
