Filament stops feeding mid print

I am having a heck of a time getting consistent results with my new Mk2. I think I have everything setup correctly but almost every print is ruined when the filament (PLA) stops feeding. If I am in the room I can hear the "feeder" clicking rather than feeding. I have tried pushing on the filament but that does not seem to help. I have to abort the print, unload the filament and reload before it works again. When I unload I can see where the feeding mechanism has gouged and squished the filament as it basically just spins around marking the same piece of PLA.

No idea what I can try to fix this issue. Appears to be independent for filament supplier as I have tried 3 or 4 with the same results.

Rarely get a completed print - aaarrrggghhhh!

If this is on the first layer. You may have the extruder too close to the bed. Regards Joan.

Hi, thanks for the input. In this case this can happen anytime, on any layer.

Hi Bian,

does this happen on both pre sliced models and home sliced models?
or just home sliced models?
have you got a picture of your first layer for a model?

Some things that can cause slipping (in no particular order), are :-
badly aligned hobbed feed gear,
Poor or inoperative extruder cold end cooling fan (30mm square fan on side of cold end ), Should blow into the housing not suck out of the housing.
tangled fibre, on reel,
Back pressure due to wrong nozzle temperature... I tried to print ABS at PLA temperatures once... It wasn't successful...
Back pressure due to partially blocked nozzle (Perhaps damaged) (Faulty PTFE tube installation inside cold end heat sink)
back pressure due to insufficient space for molten filament to escape from nozzle ( or perhaps Nozzle too close to last layer or build plate if first layer).
Over extrusion
Wrong size nozzle selected in slicer, Wrong size nozzle fitted to extruder

Check one thing at a time. change one thing at a time.
easiest to check are
30mm fan, (mine was incorrectly wired when it was supplied on my Mk 1, Had to reverse wires to get it turning),
tangled filament,
higher temperature on extruder,
reduced flow rate on extruder

you could try cleaning the nozzle with
'atomic' cleaning method
https://ultimaker.com/en/resources/1951 ... mic-method

The Atomic Cleaning Method, and the Cold Pull
Maintaining the BB print core
https://ultimaker.com/en/resources/2313 ... print-core

if you unload your filament and then remove the nozzle whilst it is hot. if you remove the filament drive pressure screws and springs, a piece of filament should pass through the remaining extruder elements without significant friction.

Good luck,

regards Joan

OK, thanks for the thoughts, I'll work my way thru each item and hopefully get this fixed.

Re: Filament stops feeding mid print

I had exactly the same situation occurring. I was using PLA and having difficulty with a new extruder assembly that I had just put together. The print would get to about 25% and then stop depositing filament. The only change I made that went from failure to success was going to a new batch of PLA that had never been exposed to air. I was at the bottom of the roll that I was using, and it's possible that the moisture that sorbs into the PLA, or the age was the issue. All I know is when I put the new pla filament in the model works perfectly.
