Feature Request Thread
Does the Prusa team frequent these forums? Is there a better place to submit feature requests?
He's mine, I do not have a real strong need for multi-color printing. What I do have a need for though is a system where when one spool runs out to automatically load the next spool of filament. I think that the multi-color system could be easily modified with optical sensors to detect the end of the spool to load the next spool. What do you think Prusa Research?

The closest I can get you to this request is this Filament out sensor and appropriate mount for the MK2. You will have to print the mount with supports. You won't be able to use this mount if you are using the stock MK2 filament holders. I had to make this device high enough so that it wouldn't interfere with the X-Carriage at 210mm Z-height. It also acts as a filament guide.

I can see a challenge for such a feature,
When changing spool it will be hard to get the exact amount of new filament before having a smooth flow.
So having to purge the filament should be necessary. But to purge it properly, you will need a support, otherwise the purged filament will mess with the printed part. That means that a kind of pillar will be needed. The limit of this reasoning is that the pillar should be managed by the slicer, and could be in various places depending of the printed part shape. However the purge of the new filament could be only managed on the firmware side, which is tricky.
So having a purge pillar would be probably a reduction of the printing surface to position it on an absolute location.
Not that easy to implement ! (in my mind anyway 😉 )

What about if the filament sensor detects it's out it sends the Change Filament command. It would then stop the printer, move the head out of the way and then automatically start loading the next reel.

There are other filament sensors on the market. And yeah, that would be ideal, but the one I listed earlier is not capable of doing that. The one I would like most is the one that can adjust the extrusion speed based on filament thickness.

Exactly. Since I'm not changing colors there is no reason to purge the nozzle. All it has to do is prime the nozzle with the new filament which it can do to the side. I'm OK with a potential priming appendage "tail" attached to my print which I can clip off after the print is done:)
