Do people print via USB? If so what software?

I have owned a Printrbot for a few years and after trying most slicers, stuck with CURA, and directly printed via USB with zero issue.

I am currently using CURA 15.x and would like to try their "new" 2.X version, but they no longer support USB printing. Further more, they believe that no-one does as USB printing is problematic and most have gone to SD.

Personally, I have no interest in SD printing and would prefer to stick with USB printing if possible.

I am now looking for my first hardware upgrade and am 99% sure I will go for the MK2S.. And I just wondered if I could still do USB printing? And if so, what software people use?

I would like to continue with CURA 15.X.. That said, its very limited as to what it could do, and I wonder if I should try something else.

Simplify3D seems to be the defacto choice, but its pricy and very complex.. And I just wonder if its a little OTT for my usage.

Would be interested to hear what others are using?

I look forwards to any thoughts you have

Jon

Well, Cura 15 is what I have installed on my PC, but I never user it now. Results are so poor in comparison to Slic3r and KISS.

I only print via USB; however there are too many issues when printing direct from PC so like many others, I run OctoPrint on the RPi.

It is really worth the upgrade to buy a Rasberry Pi, and use OctoPi and OctoPrint. That way you can print and monitor from any computer on the network.

But to answer your question directly. Yes the MK2S can print from USB, and comes with software to spool any .gcode file to the printer. You can then have freedom to use any slicer you would like. I prefer Slic3r, but you will find lots of varying options around.

If you choose a dedicated Pi computer to print from, it includes support to slice right on it (I don't) if you choose.
