BETA FW 3.0.4 with automatic calibration point alignment

Here is the new beta FW 3.0.4 with automatic calibration point finding!

- use menu "settings" -> "Calibrate bed" to calibrate bed, follow instructions on the screen
- menu "settings" -> "Reset bed calibration" to reset to default settings

DO NOT run calibration routine when any USB program connected ( Pronterface etc )
CLEAN THE NOZZLE before running the calibration

Re: BETA FW 3.0.4 with automatic calibration point alignment

Hi Josef

Questions:

1. Should filament be loaded when running this routine?
2. Should the bed/extruder be hot?
3. You say "Clean the nozzle" - internally, externally or both?
4. Should this be used on all Mk2's or only those with issues finding the probing points?
5. Any other changes to this version of firmware?
6. Do you class OctoPrint as a USB program?

Thanks

Peter

1. Should filament be loaded when running this routine?

Doesn't matter.

2. Should the bed/extruder be hot?

Doesn't matter.

3. You say "Clean the nozzle" - internally, externally or both?

Externally.

4. Should this be used on all Mk2's or only those with issues finding the probing points?

If the printer has no issue calibrating, you have no need to run the process. It just replaces the points location in FW. You can always reset to default position.

5. Any other changes to this version of firmware?

Minor firmware tweaks, optimising the RAM usage etc.

6. Do you class OctoPrint as a USB program?

Nothing should be connected to the printer while running this.

Re: BETA FW 3.0.4 with automatic calibration point alignment

I'm curious, why does the calibration probe need to hit specific spots on the heatbed to work properly? Mine is a little out, but the calibration seems to be fine.

David

The bed has 9 inserts which the probe senses. If your start and end circles don't line up then the probe may not properly see the inserts and can generate a nozzle position which is too low.

The automatic calibration point alignment worked great! It adjusted my 3-4mm offset in Y + X axis that I had!

Re: BETA FW 3.0.4 with automatic calibration point alignment

What is "FW"?

I see there are two hex files. Do I simply copy them to the SD card and then they appear somewhere in the menu?

FW = Firmware.

To update your board, download the Prusa Firmware Updater application from the Prusa website ( http://www.prusa3d.com/drivers/ ) as part of the Driver package. Then run the application and select the COM port your board is on as well as the hex file you wish to use and click update.

Re: BETA FW 3.0.4 with automatic calibration point alignment

Am I understanding correctly?
I use the Firmware Updater to install, for instance, the file "1_75mm_MK2-RAMBo13a-E3Dv6full.hex" and that file is the driver for my printer (Prusa i3 MK2).

And that is what is meant by "Install drivers"?

Firstly, you have to download and install the drivers which also installs other things like Slic3r and the firmware updater.

Then you download the latest firmware package, connect the printer to the PC via USB and you upload the correct version of the firmware for your printer to the printer using the firmware updater.

Re: BETA FW 3.0.4 with automatic calibration point alignment

Well, today I took the plunge and downloaded this firmware.

When doing the 9-point probe calibration, at the front right point the bed has always been pushed down by a millimeter or so, so I thought this may help.

The printer has been adjusted such that the probe in positioned exactly in the centre of the dotted circles at points 1 and 9.

So I ran the bed calibration and now, well things are worse. At point 1, the probe is about 1mm outside the dotted circle (Y towards the rear) and the front right of the bed (position 3) is now being pushed down about 3mm. When moving from point 1 to 3, the bed ban be seen moving forwards.

I suppose this is why it's a beta firmware...

Re: BETA FW 3.0.4 with automatic calibration point alignment

How long does this firmware take to update? I left it run for an hour without it finishing and eventually gave up and put 3.0.3 back on. I have had no other issues with updating firmware besides this one.

It takes about the same time as 3.0.3.

Re: BETA FW 3.0.4 with automatic calibration point alignment

I got a error regarding checksum and a text saying "Thank you!". And then nothing happend for a long while. When i rebooted the printer my display was blank and i had to install firmware 3.0.3 again to ge the printer up and running.

(I used the latest firmware updater from the latest driver-package on a mac with the latest os).

I have an original mk2 printer - i don't really have any probe-related-problems as of right now. But i like living on the edge 😀

Did you check the position of the PINDA probe and for proper seating of the Y-axis assembly in the frame? I had issues with the nozzle pushing down the bed initially, but after re-seating the Y-axis assembly and lowering the PINDA probe a little bit, those issues have gone away (on the 3.0.3 firmware). The software seems to have a limit of how far out of level a bed it can account for, and if the Y-axis isn't seated fully it can easily exceed that.

Re: BETA FW 3.0.4 with automatic calibration point alignment

David

Yes, my probe is positioned with significant positioning such that the nozzle gap is 0.18mm when hot without resorting to Z adjust mechanisms.

There does appear to be an issue with my bed in that the probed inserts and not fitted as precisely as they should be.

Re: BETA FW 3.0.4 with automatic calibration point alignment

I had absolutely no issues flashing, calibrating and printing with this firmware!

My first layer has never looked so amazing! It was so thin it was nearly transparent but not so much that it was too pressed up against the build plate. It was just right!

Great work! 😀
