Am I Getting Overextrusion?

Hi everybody. I received my printer a couple of weeks ago and have been printing quite a lot. In general I'm very happy with the way my prints are coming out, but I think there's still the potential for me to improve their quality so am hoping you can help.

On lots of my prints I'm getting what I can only describe as a feathered overhang on certain surfaces and when I print flat objects the top layer has a bit of a ripple effect as though too much filament is being forced out of the nozzle for the print speed.

Here's a few images of the Marvin printed at 100µm. His left eyebrow has the feathering I mentioned and then there's almost a droop at the top of his keychain attachment. I got this printing the pre-sliced Marvin at 100µm that came with the printer so tried re-slicing one myself just in case and had the same symptoms. I should note I'm well aware of the elephant's feet in these images. I have since adjusted my Z offset and corrected for this.

Here's an image of a flat surface that hopefully shows what I'm talking about:

On the assumption that it was an overextrusion problem I decided to drop the flow percentage slightly using the live tune setting on the printer. Dropping the flow from 100 to 99 gave the following results (shown using a comparison of Marvin legs, 100% on the left, 99% on the right). Clearly it's far worse and therefore flow obviously isn't the solution to my problem.

Next I wondered if it was just that the printer couldn't capture that level of detail with the 100µm settings so tried slicing Marvin at 50µm and printing him again. If anything I'd say it has accentuated the feathering and it's spread to his eyes:

I'd really appreciate any feedback or help, thank you in advance! I've sliced my files using slic3r Prusa edition. Also just checked and I have the extruder springs set to about 12.9 - 13mm (distance between washers).

Re: Am I Getting Overextrusion?

My guess is that these are all slicer setting issues, and you have provided no details.

I am ASSUMING the Marvin is the pre-sliced one? The issues you are seeing are with bridging, so I would check that the front fan is working correctly, and that it is blowing just below the tip of the nozzle. The printer can do much better than your Marvin shows, so look at that fan, and how the "HOT" fan director is installed. Photo?

If you sliced that Marvin, I think your fan settings for bridging are wrong.

The other issues, look like slicer setting and very likely temperature issues. Yet you provided no information on that for us to help evaluate.

Any advices given are offered in good faith. It is your responsibility to ensure that by following my advice you do not suffer or cause injury, damage or loss. If you solve your problem, please post the solution…

Thanks for the response!

No that Marvin is actually one I sliced myself, but I got the same issues when printing the pre-sliced one that came with the printer.

In terms of the front fan, this is how it is installed:

Regarding my cooling settings in slic3r, they are all still the default settings. These are the settings for the Prusa PLA 1.75mm. Admittedly the prints above are using ColorFabb PLA but there were no settings that seemed more appropriate in the drop down.

Does anything look jump out as incorrect?

Re: Am I Getting Overextrusion?

Those look fine.

What temperature are you printing at?

What are the bridging settings?
