3mm filament?
Hi,
I am curious whether the multi-material setup can be modified to take 3mm filament? Obviously the cooling and PTFE tubes would need to be changed, but what about the printed parts? And is 3mm filament still a common size?

It would be a major modification. Y tubes, extruder gears, heat break, nozzle, Festos, hotend, ...
Currently 1.75mm is more commonly available than 2.85mm (although both are readily available).

the minimum layer height with 1.75mm filament is 0.07 mm if you used 3mm filament with the direct drive gears that are currently in service, the minimum layer height would be nearer 0.2mm
that would be a distinct disadvantage in most instances

Thanks for your replies. The reason for my question is I have a large-bed printer (560x560x600) that I'm in the process of building/modifying, so layer height would not be so critical as with average bed-size.

Hi Kryss,
with a large bed printer you need to consider a more capable extruder and larger nozzle too... the E3d V6 probably wouldn't melt sufficient filament effectively to return acceptable build times for large models. the size you mention has more than 8 times the build volume of the original Prusa i3

My calculator says almost 18 times the volume of the Mk2 and almost 24 times that of the original Prusa i3 😉

I didn't say how much more than 8 times as big... 🙂
But i am pretty sure an E3D v6 extruder would be a poor choice.
And the heated bed would be something of a room heater... certainly more than a prusa psu could support via the rambo...
Nema17's will probably be inadequate...

I did consider making a longer bed for the prusa... but so far that is just an idea... the diagonal length has sufficed to date...
