Unable to print anything quality with supports

Hey all,
I'm attempting to print a pretty sizable part that needs support material. I have been unable to get a decent first layer after the support material, but have amazing quality from anything that doesn't use supports. I have been using the Prusa Slic3r MK2 to slice my parts for the print and have tweaked the settings here and there with no luck. This print was also done in PLA. Any tips or tricks on how to get something of higher caliber? I attached photos of the STL and the actual print once i stopped the printer.

I think the best you can do is reduce the surface exposed to supports. Turn it so the disk is vertical and the two parts that slot into the filament holder are parallel to the bed and try that.

That may help, but this problem may not be fixed so easily on another part. I'm more so using this as an example for this reoccurring problem.

Jack,

I hear you, but until Prusa are able to issue an amended Slic3r PE with new support generation, we can either use orientation to minimise support and then post process, or use another programme such as meshmixer to generate alternative support and re-export the stl with that support added.

Bill,
Would it be with the investment to purchase simplify3d or would I likely still have the issue?

Bill,

I am not a simplify3d user, but from what I have read it has its share of problems and is not being actively developed at the pace Prusa are driving Slic3r PE. For now I use the workflow I outlined and eagerly await Prusa's next release.

Your needs may be different - is there a trial available for simplify3d that would allow you to answer your own question?
