Z-axis loud rumble, no movement
After a several month hiatus from using the printer, upon startup I discovered that the z-axis has stopped operating. It actually passes the Self-test, but when I try to manually move the z-axis, it rumbles loudly and moves only slightly, sometimes and little lower and sometimes up a bit. I loosened the trapezoid nuts and checked the travel: it seems very smooth. The rods look new. I also tried re-seating the z-axis connectors onto the controller.
Do I have a bad z-axis motor, and if so, how best to test which one it is?
When rotating a disconnected motor by hand it should be smooth, you will feel the steps but there should be no grating and no stiffness.
A failing motor may still turn when free but fail under pressure.
Cheerio,

I think I found the problem: one of the A4982 chips has a pit on the surface. I'm attaching a photo.
Looks like a replacement board is in my future. 🤤
