ULTEM PEI bed film replacement

I have a few marks on my bed film that leave marks on the finished print. McMaster Carr sells PEI film. What thickness do I need and what type of adhesive should I use to put it on the bed?

Have you seen the guide about replacing the PEI-sheet?
http://manual.prusa3d.com/Guide/Replacing+the+PEI+sheet/133

On one of the images you can see the writing "3M 468MP, 200MP Adhesive".

That should help you find the right sheet.

Did not see this. Spoke with customer service and they advised me to order 1 abs juice and one glass for the bed, and make a note that it was for a replacement PEI cover. That is about 10 bucks, cheap enough but when the shipping was over 50 US dollars. I am thinking if I am going to spend that much for shipping I am going to order 4 or 5 of these.

Yea i imagine they will add the PEI film replacment to the shop sooner or later.

But i do hope for those of us here in the U.S. they put it up on amazon(like they did with the mk1) or something to save on shipping 😛

Another option (if you are printing PLA) is to use blue tape. But get the right tape from a 3D printer supplier... You would also have to lower the bed temperature to 40/45 degrees.

Is there an alternative to Limonene? It is expensive the only place I can find it charges almost 90 EUR for 0,5l.

I hope that the PEI sheet could be provided with a bit of lemonene. Maybe 10 cl could be enough ?

I'm like Jon Snow, I know nothing.

Here are a couple of my observations of the PEI sheet from this distributor vs Prusa Research's version:

1. This one is a gloss finish. The one from Prusa Research is a Matte finish.
2. This one covers a larger surface area of the bed.
3. This PEI sheet and adhesive is thinner than Prusa Research's version.
4. This version uses 467MP/200 adhesive, Prusa Research's version uses 468MP/200 adhesive.

Dimensions PNG

and an 8 inch (200mm) or greater caliper is recommended.

Most sheets are gloss on one side, and matte on the other I think. PR chose to put the adhesive on the gloss.

I don't think you want to go too thin on the sheet either; remember it still has to jump over some screw holes.

I am also looking into buying some extra PEI sheets since mine is already trashed after just a couple of weeks lol.

I checked the above link: http://catalog.cshyde.com/viewitems/3d-printing-materials/ultem-pei , which option should I get? Im thinking the 3mil 9"x10" sheet should work.

What do you guys think?

This is the same one I went with. See my previous post about my thoughts of this version vs the official Prusa Research version.

Re: ULTEM PEI bed film replacement

I have purchased from them for a different 3d printer and it has worked great for me. I liked that the one I bought already had the adhesive backing on it and it was easy to apply.

Re: ULTEM PEI bed film replacement

Great good to know.
wondering if the thickness difference will be an issue trying to get specs from PR is a little challenging. says 175um but adhesive is also 150-220 so it's a total thickness of approx 350um gotta make sure they can replicate that

Re: ULTEM PEI bed film replacement

Hi all

Was also looking for a PEI source, very difficult to find one in Europe.
But why would you buy bigger and cut to size?

If I read this correctly the CSHyde catalog has the same dimensions on stock as the Prusa version.
http://catalog.cshyde.com/item/ultem-pei/ultem-pei/36-5a-3d-8-82x10

Regarding thickness:

The Prusa PEI is 175um or +-6,8 mil
Combined with the thickness of the adhesive which is 5 mil or +- 127um
= 11,8 mil or +- 300um

So looking at the CSHyde catalog, wouldn't the 5 mil PEI + 5 mil adhesive be a closer match?

Unless I'm overlooking something?

PS: 3M adhesive info found here: http://solutions.3m.com/wps/portal/3M/en_US/Adhesives/Tapes/Products/~/3M-Adhesive-Transfer-Tape-468MP-Clear-24-in-x-60-yd-5-mil-1-roll-per-case?N=8140106+3291638463+4294922095&rt=rud

This size didn't exist at cshyde when this thread was started.

Re: ULTEM PEI bed film replacement

I think cshyde created this listing after my 20 or so emails with them. I got them all the dimensions and thicknesses and after a few weeks they emailed me with a "what do you think about this?"
Unfortunately by that time I had already received my replacement sheet from Prusa, (I also ordered a few extra), but I was able to give them dimensions of removed PEI sheet (no adhesive) and a new sheet (adhesive applied). I think they further tweaked it after that.

Good to know they are working to fill the need. They were very responsive I just ultimately got my needs filled by Prusa before they could create a similar product.

If that's any indication, I'd not hesitate to order from them in the future.

Re: ULTEM PEI bed film replacement

Thanks guys, I figured it was either not in the assortment or there was a good reason why you cut it to size yourself.

But would you agree to go for the combined 10 mil thickness?

Found out that shipping to Belgium can be as low as 15 USD which is reasonable. (not sure about import charges)

Re: ULTEM PEI bed film replacement

I ordered the 3 mil and its definitely not as thick as the original. The 3 mil is definitely really thin and does not take as much abuse as the original, the thin sheet marks really easily especially when i am removing parts from the board, but works just the same. Also i realize the 3 mil sheet does not hide the traces on the PCB bed as well, so if you look closely on my PCB you can see the lines. But next time I am definitely getting the 5 mil.
